These workshops are designed for faculty members and librarians at colleges that have membership with the eHRAF databases, or those who are interested in learning more about membership.

HRAF has developed resources to support teaching, learning, and research across the social sciences and beyond. We will explore Teaching eHRAF, our collection of ready-to-use exercises and syllabi that make it easier to integrate eHRAF into classrooms and curricula. These materials are designed to help instructors engage students with cross-cultural comparison, ethnographic case studies, and hands-on data analysis. We will also demonstrate the eHRAF Workbooks for introductory courses in cultural anthropology and archaeology with activities to engage students.

HRAF is pleased to welcome two new Melvin Ember Interns for 2025-2026. The intent of the internship is to learn about cross-cultural research through practical experience. The interns will help Carol Ember prepare topical modules summarizing cross-cultural research in Explaining Human Culture. The interns will read and analyze recent cross-cultural research with the goal of summarizing materials and will also participate in on-going cross-cultural research projects.

Hattie Berke graduated summa cum laude from Truman State University in December 2024 with B.A.s in Sociology/Anthropology and Spanish. She earned honors in Sociology/Anthropology and a minor in Philosophy and Religion. Hattie is particularly interested in how the environment affects organizational aspects of culture and the intersection of anthropology and primatology.

Jonathan Zhang graduated from Boston University in May 2025 with a B.A. in Sociocultural Anthropology (with honors) and in Psychology. His academic and research interests lie at the intersection of anthropology and psychology, with a focus on cross-cultural approaches to mental health. Jonathan is preparing his thesis research for publication.

HRAF congratulates Matthew Longcore, our Director of Membership and Outreach, on earning a Ph.D. in Humanities from Salve Regina University.

His doctoral dissertation is titled Dreaming Spires: Collegiate Gothic Architecture on American Campuses. This study provides an architectural and social history of the Collegiate Gothic movement in the United States, which was at its peak of popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Collegiate Gothic architecture became a favored style on the campuses of several elite educational institutions including Yale, Princeton, Trinity, and others. This style best exemplified the Anglophile value system of the Episcopalian upper class.

Matthew holds a master’s degree in Archaeological Studies from Yale University, a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management from Harvard University, and a master’s degree in Education from Fairfield University. He received his bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Trinity College. As an undergraduate, he studied abroad at Oxford University.

Matthew also teaches Anthropology at the University of Connecticut and serves as the faculty advisor for the UConn Stamford Anthropology Society.

HRAF Global Scholar Dr. Jorge E. Miceli is a researcher at Universidad de Buenos Aires and part of a research project that is financed and accredited by the university which examines the dietary patterns of indigenous peoples in Northern Canada. Dr. Miceli studies rural populations in the Labrador region, with a particular focus on the Innu (NH06) people.

Dr. Miceli brings to his research a wide-ranging academic background that enriches his approach to anthropology. He earned his Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from Universidad de Buenos Aires, following a master’s degree in Discourse Analysis from the same institution. He is currently completing a master’s degree in the Generation and Analysis of Statistical Data at Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero.

HRAF is honored to feature Dr. Jorge E. Miceli as one of our HRAF Global Scholars for 2025. We look forward to following the progress of his project and the important contributions it will bring to the study of indigenous food systems and anthropological research more broadly.
