Calling All Employers: Cut Commute Costs with FareShare
Employers, you can help your employees cut the cost of their commute by participating in FareShare. Montgomery County’s FareShare program provides reimbursement funds to increase the dollar impact of an employer’s subsidy for employees who commute via vanpool or public transportation. The County will reimburse the employer for any amount provided over the $25 minimum contribution, up to $300/month. (A maximum of $40,000 is available in one year to any one employer.)

FareShare staff will visit your office or set up a virtual meeting free of charge to help you set up a commuting benefits program that is tailored to your company's and employees’ needs. Learn more about the FareShare program here.
Bike to Work Day Registration Opens Next Month
Registration for Bike to Work Day will open in early March. Join thousands of Montgomery County commuters on May 19 as they ditch their cars and routine commutes to participate in Bike to Work Day (BTWD).

The day kicks off with 100 early morning “pit stop” events located throughout D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, including 13 here in Montgomery County. At each pit stop, you can enjoy raffle prizes, snacks, beverages, t-shirts, and more. The first 15,000 who register and attend a pit stop event by bike will receive a free t-shirt!

The event is a great opportunity for commuters to try out biking to work over other forms of transportation. And for employers, encouraging biking to work can reduce healthcare costs, decrease absenteeism, increase productivity, reduce parking costs, and increase corporate social responsibility. Participate in Bike to Work Day and see if you can make cycling part of your daily routine!

Ride On Increased Frequency on 31 Bus Routes
Montgomery County Ride On is making BIG changes to its bus routes, which will improve their efficiency. Included in these changes is increased frequency on 31 Routes. Using data from riders and bus performance, MCDOT is altering times, frequency and hours of operation for some routes. Plus, all Ride On bus fares are now only $1. That’s half the price of the pre-pandemic fare! These changes aid MCDOT’s efforts to reduce congestion and increase the quality of life for Montgomery County residents.

What to Look Forward to: Continued data-based route alterations in the future, to ensure our transportation system is the best it can be for you.

MCDOT Celebrated Transit Equity Day on February 4
Saturday, February 4, was Transit Equity Day. This holiday honors civil rights activist Rosa Parks, on her birthday. In 1955, Rosa Parks bravely refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus to a white man. Her actions inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott led by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To commemorate Transit Equity Day, every Ride On bus reserved a seat in honor of Rosa Parks’ bravery and historic stand for making public transportation available to all.

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation continues to reassess our transportation system to ensure the needs of all our residents are met. Current changes to our transportation system are a part of our year-long Ride On Reimagined Study. We’re continuing our efforts to provide seniors, people with disabilities, county youth and low-income adults better access to transportation.
Walk Wisely in the Winter
We’ve had a pretty mild winter so far, but that can change any day. Prepare for inclement weather by visiting Montgomery County’s Winter Storm Information portal. 

Find out if MCDOT plows your street and check snow removal statuses as you prepare for chilly commutes. You can also submit a service request for both Montgomery County and the Maryland State Highway Administration. 

When walking, be sure to:
  • Cross the street at crosswalks and intersections.
  • Watch for turning vehicles.
  • Wait for the walk signal.
  • Use the push buttons to activate HAWK signals for safe crossing.
  • Be visible. Wear something light and reflective after dark.
  • Watch out for blind spots around trucks and buses.
