Understanding Medicare Choices


Whether you’re signing up for the first time or wondering if you should make a change, this workshop will help you make a more informed decision about Medicare.


We will break down the different types of medical expenses and compare how traditional Medicare (A/B/D & Supplement Plans) and Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) cover – or don’t cover – those expenses.


We’ll also talk about when you should sign up, when you can change from one plan to another (and the barriers to doing that), and what additional types of insurance could fill the gaps.

Starting your Social Security benefits may be as simple as filling out a form. But there are many choices to make.


Learn rules and strategies for single individuals and married couples, how other income can affect your Social Security benefits, and special options available to widows and widowers.


We will also cover the impact of the FAIR Act on government workers receiving pensions from jobs not covered by Social Security.

Member Access serves as a virtual way to contact IMRF any time. In Member Access you can:

  • Send IMRF secure messages
  • Update your contact information like your address and phone number
  • Submit a new W-4P tax withholding form
  • Update your payment preferences and view your payment history
  • Change your beneficiaries


Most importantly, you can choose to receive documents with your personal information directly through your secure Member Access account.

Once You Have Member Access -

Get Your Documents Safely & Securely

Many documents and forms, like your 1099-R, contain your Personally Identifiable Information (PII) like your IRS account number and home address.


By receiving these documents electronically, through your Member Access account, you can help ensure that your PII does not get into the wrong hands.


Additionally, once these documents are in your Member Access account, you can view them at any time in the future if you need them again.

Follow the directions to quickly and easily update your Communication Preferences!

How to Update Your Communication Preference:

  1. Log into your account at member.imrf.org.
  2. Click on your “Pension Profile” widget.
  3. In the “Basic Personal Information” section, scroll to the “Communication Preferences” section and click “Update.”
  4. Change Delivery Methods to “Electronic version only," and click "Next.”
  5. Review the changes made to Delivery Methods, Notification Preferences, and Contact Information and click “Confirm.”
