PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & NETWORKING
“Emerging Stronger: The Power of Family Medicine,” being held viz Zoom on Sept. 9-11, provides an opportunity to explore the specialty through plenary presentations, education sessions, poster presentations, and exhibits. Register by Sept. 1.

Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Division of Immunization in collaboration with the Michigan State University Extension is kicking off the 2021-2022 flu vaccination season with the 10th annual Pediatric and Adult Influenza Webinar on Sept. 1, 12-1 pm ET. The webinar will communicate important information for immunizing providers, including influenza vaccine recommendations, surveillance data, and strategies for increasing influenza vaccination rates. Registration closes Aug. 31.

Female residents, save Oct. 21, 6:30-8:30 pm ET, to attend this inaugural in-person networking event designed especially for you! Hear from female family physicians at different stages of their careers about gender-specific considerations such as how to negotiate a contract and pay, family planning, preparing for maternity leave, work-life balance, and more. A live webinar option will also be offered for those unable to attend the event in person. Watch for details and registration to open in September.

Each year, the Center for the History of Family Medicine sponsors a contest to encourage medical students and family medicine residents to write scholarly essays relevant to the history of family medicine in the United States. The first-place winner will receive $1,000 and the second-place winner will receive a $500 award. The submission deadline is Nov. 1.

Now in its 44th year, the annual Michigan Family Medicine Research Day is designed to encourage and assist new researchers and scholars in family medicine, nursing, and the behavioral sciences, facilitating learning and the exchange of ideas that may improve patterns of practice and the health of patients. Stay tuned for details from Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, the lead host of the 2022 event.

In addition to live webinars and events, MAFP and Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan also offer on-demand CME and professional development webinars to ensure members have access to information and training when in-person events are not an option due to travel restrictions. Our on-demand webinar line-up includes the year-long "Stay on Course: Your Ticket to Family Medicine CME" package approved for 13 CME credits, as well as individual webinars on pain and symptom management, human trafficking, and medical ethics, for which training is required for medical licensure and renewal in Michigan. LEADERSHIP
During AAFP’s 2021 National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students, Mikita Patel, MD was elected resident alternate delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates. Dr. Patel is training at McLaren Oakland Family Medicine Residency and served as this year’s resident alternate delegate to National Conference on behalf of MAFP. "I chose [to run for] this position because I am passionate about making positive changes in resident wellness, preventive medicine, social determinants of health, and health equity. I am so excited about working together with residents to create a better future in family medicine. I am truly honored to be their voice to Congress," said Dr. Patel.

Now in its second year, Michigan Academy of Family Physicians’ Resident Ambassador Program is designed to strengthen the relationship between the Academy and Michigan’s family medicine residency programs, nurture family medicine and Academy champions, and enhance communication. AWARDS
Hima Chopra, MD was selected to receive the 2021 Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education from the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Chopra is chief resident at McLaren Oakland Family Medicine Residency in Pontiac and resident member on the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors. She is one of just 12 residents from across the country to receive this prestigious award, ranking her among the top family medicine residents in the country.
With 600-plus resident members of Michigan Academy of Family Physicians, our state boasts many stellar family medicine resident physicians. This year MAFP was honored to present the 2021 Michigan Family Medicine Resident of the Year Award to Srvanai Alluri, MBBS, a recent graduate of Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine's Family Medicine Residency program in Kalamazoo.
Mark Paschall, MD, a former residency program director and family physician affiliated with Ascension St. John Health System, was recognized with the 2021 Michigan Family Medicine Educator of the Year Award by Michigan Academy of Family Physicians who has made outstanding contributions to family medicine education in Michigan. Nominations for the 2022 awards are due by March 1.
ACADEMY MEMBERSHIP
All family medicine residents are eligible for membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians and the chapter in the state in which they are training.
