In this week's lesson, students learn about the fifth blessing and promise of the Beatitudes. They explore the terms "mercy" and "merciful" and contrast mercy to the harshness we see in the world. They will receive a challenge to see the world through lenses of mercy, or "mercy glasses."
Parents may talk with children about a time they received mercy or showed mercy to others. When we practice looking for mercy, we become more aware of when mercy happens and how to be more merciful. Children may practice by remembering a story about when they received or gave mercy and draw their own story of mercy. Their story may be similar to Finn and Micah in the lesson.
Children's book recommendations to accompany this lesson are Be Kind, written by Pat Zietlow Miller and illustrated by Jen Hill; and Ish, written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds.
This is the first lesson of the second curriculum packet for the Beatitudes. If you need to pick up a packet, please email Mary Beth Tipton at mtipton@csmsg.org. Packets also will be available at the Sunday Outdoor Children's Eucharist.
