This session will feature a simulated board meeting of a hypothetical nonprofit social service agency facing many problems and issues -- such as funding cutbacks requiring lay-offs, the operational effects of politics, organized labor and public policy makers, an anonymous whistle blower complaint alleging malfeasance, an aging building in need of repair, disputes about spending reserves and endowment funds, the possibility of a merger, and more.
This session will be facilitated by Jack Horak (TANGO Director of Nonprofit Education and Consulting), and the role of the board of directors will be played by experienced nonprofit professionals: The session will be lively and provocative, and audience participation will be welcomed as time allows:

1:30 pm - Simplifying Corporate Compliance - Managing Risk Without Losing Your Mind!
"Corporate Compliance" is a nebulous and expansive term in that it is used to refer to the laws, regulations, policies and "best practices" that apply to nonprofit organizations. Sound corporate compliance policies should help nonprofits prevent lawsuits, regulatory fines and penalties as well as undesirable incidents that damage their goodwill and reputation. Too much compliance can be a bad thing. Corporate "over compliance" occurs when a nonprofit adopts so many policies that they become exacting and impracticable to adhere to, resulting in the nonprofit's failure to effectively and efficiently serve its exempt purposes and stakeholders.
In this session, Ed Spinella and Paul Ballasy will strive to help nonprofits find the right balance by combining their respective legal and accounting perspectives. Ed and Paul will cover the following: (1) determining who or what a nonprofit must comply with; (2) getting back to the basics and the fundamental legal and accounting principles that apply to all nonprofits; and (3) discussing operational and practical tips designed to help nonprofits strike the balance of responsibly adopting and adhering to policies without sacrificing their missions.
