CMS, AMA Take Steps to Reduce Burden of MACRA's QPP 
On June 20, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued a proposed rule that would make changes in the second year of the Quality Payment Program as required by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA). CMS's goal is to simplify the program, especially for small, independent and rural practices, while ensuring fiscal sustainability and high-quality care within Medicare. Read more here.
CMS to Overhaul Medicare Cards to Fight Fraud
In order to prevent fraud, fight identity theft and protect essential program funding and the private healthcare and financial information of Medicare beneficiaries, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is taking steps to remove Social Security numbers from Medicare cards. Read more here.
Medical Student Receives Leadership Award
Fourth-year University of Minnesota Medical School student Brooke Dugdale recently received the prestigious Excellence in Medicine Leadership Award presented by the AMA Foundation. Dugdale is a member of the MMA's Health Equity Advisory Group, and also served as a member of the MMA Health Disparities Work Group and the MMA Public Health Committee. The award recognizes physicians who "exemplify the highest values of volunteerism, community engagement, leadership and dedication to the care of underserved populations."
Time to Submit Issues for Open Issues Forum at Annual Conference
Have an issue for which MMA action may be needed? Submit it for consideration at the Open Issues Forum, held annually at the MMA Annual Conference. This is a great opportunity to bring issues to the attention of the MMA, to discuss issues submitted by your fellow colleagues, and to get perspective on issues from physicians across the state. Deadline: Friday, Aug. 11.
Medical Students, Residents and Fellows: Share Research at the 4th Annual Poster Symposium
Get feedback from practicing physicians on your research! Submit an abstract to be considered for a poster presentation during the MMA's Annual Conference on Sept. 23 in Rochester. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in and actively pursuing an approved course within Minnesota leading to the degree of doctor of medicine or osteopathy, or engaged in a resident or fellow program approved by the Liaison Committee on Graduate Medical Education. If you have questions regarding eligibility, contact the MMA at Accepted poster entrants receive free registration to the conference. Submission deadline: July 15.
MMA Awards Nomination Deadline: June 30
