The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and exacerbated the many problems with elder care in Canada, especially in Ontario and Quebec where COVID-19 hit hardest. Our first Speakers Series of the 2020-21 year includes three presentations that will address different aspects of Elder Care in Ontario, followed by a panel discussion.

Karen Henderson will speak about the issues in long term care (LTC). Karen is the founder and CEO of the Long Term Care Planning Network, a national resource centre for aging and long term care education and planning.

Michèle Harding will speak about issues in community care and home care. Michèle is the Chair of the Board of Directors for Care Watch OntarioCare Watch is an organization led by senior citizens that advocates for improved home care and community services for Ontario’s elderly. They monitor Ontario’s home care system and community services and provide analysis and feedback to policy makers to improve the system’s quality, accessibility, and equity.

Dan Levitt will speak about legislative issues in elder care, specifically pertaining to ageism. Dan is an elder care leader, writer, and gerontologist, specializing in helping others to create better lives for seniors, and is also the Executive Director of Tabor Village, a community of more than 300 seniors, inspiring a team of over 400 employees and volunteers, with a commitment to continuously improving their quality of life.

The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion where the three speakers will review certain issues in more detail and identify potential follow-up action items that can be undertaken by Ontario Council clubs. The panel will also address questions from the audience. Questions from OC members are to be submitted in advance to Sandra Shaw, Chair of the Status of Women and Human Rights Standing Committee.
