$160M NSF Engine Award is a Defining Win for Akron and Northeast Ohio

This month, the U.S. National Science Foundation selected the NEO-SMART Engine, led by Case Western Reserve University, for its Regional Innovation Engines program—a transformational win for Northeast Ohio’s advanced materials economy and a powerful validation of Akron’s leadership in polymer innovation. With up to $160 million available over 10 years, the award will expand the region’s capacity for manufacturing innovation, technology commercialization, workforce development and economic growth.

For Greater Akron and the Polymer Industry Cluster, NEO-SMART builds on more than five years of focused, industry-led work to strengthen one of the nation’s most powerful ecosystems for polymers and advanced materials. That momentum is rooted in Akron’s unmatched legacy in rubber and polymers and reinforced by major federal and state designations, including the U.S. EDA Sustainable Polymers Tech Hub and the State of Ohio Innovation Hub award. Greater Akron enters this next chapter with the assets to lead: world-class polymer companies, scientists, advanced manufacturers, skilled tradespeople and innovators, anchored by The University of Akron and industry leaders including The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Bridgestone Americas and Synthomer. Together, those strengths give the region the history, companies, talent and partnerships to help drive the next era of polymer science and advanced manufacturing.

Synthe6 Cohort Participant Closes Oversubscribed $3.4 Million Seed Round

Congratulations to Auxilium Health, a participant in the inaugural Synthe6 Materials Accelerator cohort and a 2025 recipient of R&D Funding through the Polymer Industry Cluster, for closing an oversubscribed $3.4 million seed round to advance its Aer™ biomaterial platform toward FDA clearance and first-in-human studies.

Instead of killing bacteria after they attach to a material, Auxilium’s Aer™ platform is designed to help prevent bacteria from sticking in the first place while still supporting the body’s natural healing process without relying on antibiotics.

The new capital will advance the company's lead product toward FDA clearance and into first-in-human use while deepening the team and the research behind it.

Over the last year, Auxilium's full-time team has doubled, attracting top researchers and scientists to relocate to Northeast Ohio to join the mission.

Northeast Ohio company recognized with Innovation Award

Summit Glove, an affiliate of Visual Detection Systems, recently received the 2026 World of Wipes® Innovation Award for its First Defense™ Fentanyl Detection Wipe.

Developed to help protect law enforcement, first responders, and other frontline professionals, the single-use wipe rapidly detects trace amounts of fentanyl through a visible color change, providing a practical tool for safer decision-making in the field.

The recognition underscores how innovation within the polymer and advanced materials ecosystem is enabling new applications that improve safety, performance, and reliability in critical environments.

Project Update: PIC innovation pilot facility

Site preparation is currently underway at 100 Lincoln Street, paving the way for the new Innovation Pilot Facility.
