Summer Arrives



Of the four seasons that we enjoy on the Delmarva, Summer ranks at the top of the list for many along the Eastern Seaboard. And for good reason. What's not to like about it? With the passing of Memorial Day, into our collective stored memories, we move seamlessly into the summer season. Thanks to warm weather we can participate in an abundance of outdoor activities like fishing, boating, swimming, picnics, and seemingly endless days of leisure wiled away—pursuing a myriad of pastimes that make us feel glad to be alive. Of course, being located along the ocean as Rehoboth Beach is gives added pleasure to the longer days of the summer season. Everything kicks into high gear for people of all ages to participate in or just observe: Whatever suits your fancy. Walk the boardwalk, ride some rides, play some games, listen to some music at the bandstand, or just enjoy an ice cream or French fries. For the more adventurous soul in you, dip your toes into the Atlantic Ocean, challenging the waves to catch you if they can. Along the way you can enjoy time in some of the many fine restaurants and shopping establishments that call Rehoboth Beach home. To help you with the latter, we have highlighted some of our member establishments and encourage you to visit them during your visit to downtown Rehoboth Beach.

For old standards that never disappoint, be sure and drop by Mariachi restaurant just off the boardwalk on Wilmington Avenue. Their friendly service and fine Spanish, Mexican, and Latin American cuisine have kept customers coming back for over a decade. Whether you go for the authentic Mexican dishes or the delicious tequila and margarita drinks, at their fully stocked bar, everyone will leave happy. If your palate is longing for more traditional bar food, then the Purple Parrott Biergarten is the place for you. Located in the rear of the Purple Parrot Grill with a very tropical landscape, full bar, and tables in the sand, you can wile away the day into the evening enjoying daily happy hour drink and nightly food specials that will delight everyone in your party. On your way back to your accommodations don't miss Snyder's Candy on Rehoboth Avenue, known for their flavored sodas, saltwater taffy, and caramel- or chocolate-covered apples, along with a myriad of other delectable treats that will get you through the evening. Another business that is a family affair with Kaan Pomakoglu and his mom and dad all pitching in at the newly opened Kaan's Bakery on the ground level of the Avenue Inn on Wilmington Avenue. Their menu includes cakes, mini cakes, pies, pastries, eclairs, twists, donuts, and breads that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth any time of day.  

As for shopping experiences that are sure to delight, Lilypad Children's Boutique ranks among the best children's stores at the beach. Their high-quality unique children's gifts and clothing are beautifully displayed and perfect for the children or grandchildren on your shopping list. Other exciting family-owned businesses include Rehoboth Breeze, located in the heart of Rehoboth Beach on Rehoboth Avenue. They carry a large assortment of top-quality cotton T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and bags in both funky and classic designs. Be sure to stop in at Browseabout Books, on Rehoboth Avenue, whether your interest lies in children's books, a good novel to read on the beach or by the pool, or a swanky gift or game to occupy your leisure time: They are sure to have just the item you are looking for in their ample inventory on display. And speaking of things to do, you must visit Something Comfortable, Delmarva's certified bra fitter. It is a unique lingerie shopping experience for women of all ages and sizes.

However, after ten days of rainy, cloudy conditions here at the beach, the sun finally showed its face, and everyone's mood immediately improved. The Royal Treat

The Royal Treat, a breakfast and ice cream parlor at 4 Wilmington Avenue—right off the boardwalk—has been a family-run and -owned business for its nearly 40-year history. Royal Treat’s Fornwalt family recently announced that they will not be serving breakfast during the 2022 season. They will serve ice cream in their parlor on afternoons and evenings. This decision was made due to the growing responsibilities of caring for aging family members as well as staffing shortages.

The Royal Treat Family is grateful for the support of the Rehoboth Beach community and proud to have served this community during the last 41 years. If you would like to help celebrate the Royal Treat and share your memories with the Fornwalt family, you can ask about signing their guest book during hours of operation or consider recording a brief video by following the link on the Royal Treat Facebook page.

Snyder’s Candy

Snyder’s Candy has been a Rehoboth Beach institution since 1940. 82 years in business! Snyder’s is located at 60 Rehoboth Avenue. Jeff Balk, who has owned the business for the last 15 years, announced that the business has been sold. The new owner is Greg Kalinsky. He and his wife are thrilled to own a community icon.

Rehoboth in Bloom: A New Garden

Rehoboth in Bloom is currently in the planning process for an exciting new garden, tentatively named “Canalside Garden.” It will occupy the space between the south side of the Rehoboth Beach Museum and the sidewalk. Envisioned are several trees, including replacing the Red Bud thatwas removed during one of the many construction projects in that location. Rehoboth in Bloom will add a combination of shrubs, annuals, and perennials. Rehoboth Beach Gumbo Crawl 2022 Winners

Following a highly successful, sold-out Gumbo Crawl on April 30^th with 16 participating restaurants providing their special take on every type of Gumbo imaginable, we had to continue the fun with an awards ceremony for the winning restaurants. Every Gumbo Crawl ticket-holder had a ballot and on Wednesday evening, May 4^th, Purple Parrot Grill Beach Haus & Biergarten hosted the participating restaurants to announce the winners.

First Place winner was Café Azafrán, with Mariachi Restaurant placing second and Above the Dunes capturing third place. This was such a difficult decision to make for many ticket holders with all the delicious food served by the event venues.  Read More

The J-1 Visa Program for Summer Employment

The US J1 Visa is a nonimmigrant visa for foreign nationals coming to the United States to participate in work-and-study-based exchange visitor programs. J1 Visa exchange visitor programs allow participants to work, study, teach, conduct research, or receive training in the USA for a period of a few weeks to a few years.

To obtain a J1 Visa, foreign nationals must apply for and be approved to participate in a J1 Visa USA exchange visitor program. There are 14 individual J1 programs within the J1 exchange visitor visa category pertaining to various occupations and functions. Rehoboth Beach Patrol Is 100 Years Old!

The Rehoboth Beach Patrol is celebrating 100 years of lifeguarding this summer with a celebration on July 30th at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.  Established in 1921 by Benjamin F. Shaw and the Red Cross with a total of 2 guards, the Rehoboth Beach Patrol is considered one of the Nation’s leading Beach Patrols. Rehoboth Beach History Lecture

The Sussex Room, Boardwalk Plaza Hotel

The topic for the final session in the Rehoboth Beach History Lecture series will be the Boardwalk Barons—wealthy industrialists from Wilmington, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC. The Barons built “cottages” on Rehoboth’s boardwalk in the 1800s. Come to the lecture to learn who they were and how they organized to take over management of Rehoboth Beach in 1891. The fee to attend the lecture is $25, and reservations are required: call 302-521-4190. The lecture will run from 7:15 to 8:30pm. The entire stretch of Rehoboth Beach is open and ready to welcome visitors. However, Rehoboth's beach is still showing impacts from the nor'easter that lingered for nearly a week in early May.
