Focused Tour:
Reimagine Success
with Athlete Power!
November 13, 2018
Insights from Lisa Mitzel

Re-Imagine. “Reimagine the Path to Success” is the title of my recent parent-coach seminar in Nor Calif. It was fabulous! Parents and coaches were fully engaged because this is new thinking, my friends. We learn from those before us, and yet it’s time to break the mold.

In our history, not that long ago, adults said things like: “Kids are to be seen, not heard,” and to a child they’d say, “Don’t speak till your spoken to.” This is our history, so for athletes to feel they CAN think, they CAN speak up, they ARE intelligent, we need radical autonomy . If your athletes panic, if they are worried, if they are perfectionists, then pay attention.

Athletes interacting with coaches and parents as equals is empowering and radical. When a young person feels controlled, they have no freedoms. They have no voice and certainly can not make decisions. If you want your athletes to build their self-esteem and confidence for sports and life, it takes a radical new approach. There are multiple pressures in the world (social, academic, familial, sports, etc.), so if you don’t facilitate mental training, which allows athletes to go inside their own mind (not feel pressured) and get in tune with their inner power, then you may want to reconsider.

Reimagine coaching. Reimagine parenting. Let’s give the athletes autonomy, decision-power, and allow them to feel in control. Inspire your athletes’ desire. VOLITION . Because, it’s like magic.

Sneak Peek - from FAOF:
Chapter 1 - Your Brain is a Muscle
Mindset: Volition

Volition is the powerful will inside you that aims to rise up, take action, and for athletes, to
perform well. It is an all-encompassing desire; a personal attitude that is developed through your vision and your athlete’s vision of their future self. They imagine doing the hard work, and little by little, they witness their own growth and strength. They learn that they can make progress. You and your athletes believe you can achieve!

Examples of the Volition Mindset are often found in movies—all kinds. For many of the teams I’ve coached, I’ve shown specific sports films that foster a deep motivation to practice with commitment, and to imagine and believe in the extraordinary. Fun team parties with a movie and popcorn can be very inspiring. You can even watch the same type of motivating film with your family. A short list of sports movies I recommend: Cool Runnings, Hoosiers, Rudy, The Rookie, Bend it Like Beckham, Gracie, Blue Crush, and A League of their
Own.

Trigger your athletes’ volition. Create a bond and a trust that makes a terrific partnership. As you approach the holidays, give thanks for your family, friends, all that you have, and your athletes, for whom you commit your time, mind, and spirit. Watch a movie together. Have Family Time or Team Bonding Time. Ask your athletes what they think. Ask them how they want to overcome a struggle? Then… LISTEN . When your athletes feel intelligent, that you want to hear their
thoughts, it’s kind of radical…and incredible things happen.

Next week’s FAOF Sneak Peek - from Chapter 2: The Six Mental Skills. Learn how the mind is where we need to coach…not the body. Parents can also get calm with athletes. Wow.
