Dear Neighbor,
Since the announcement that Monumental Sports plans to move the Caps and Wizards to Virginia, I've heard from a lot of residents who are deeply concerned about DC's downtown. It's true that the stakes are high: we have to get this it right because downtown is such a driver of tax revenue, which in turn supports our schools, city services, and safety net programs. I wrote an op-ed, just published in Washington Business Journal, to put forward my vision of the future of downtown.
As chair of the Council's Housing Committee, I want to see more mixed income housing downtown, along with amenities that can support families and neighborhoods. The reality is we are never going to have a downtown that looks the same as it did in 2019 because remote work and artificial intelligence are changing where and how people do their jobs. But this opens the door to make downtown a destination, and a home, for a broader range of people.
