A Message from the Manager of Volunteer Engagement

'Tis the season... to volunteer at Reiman Gardens!

Bitmoji of Kim catching snowflakes on her tongue.

"Dark," "snow," and "cold" may be bad words to some people, but they make for perfect Winter Wonderscape conditions! Thanks to everyone who has signed up to participate in our biggest event of the year. We're keeping our fingers crossed that severe weather doesn't impact our plans as much as it did in 2022. We could still use a lot of help during the last two weeks of December, so if you'll be in Ames, please sign up to spread holiday cheer (more information below).

Below you'll see links to complete the 2023 Volunteer Satisfaction survey, some exciting news about Reiman Gardens, info about our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Event, a special request from me, and some new volunteer opportunities and needs coming our way.

I hope you all have exciting plans for the holidays and winter break. Hopefully, attending or volunteering at Winter Wonderscape is part of your festivities! Thanks for all you do around here. ;

❄️❤, Kim, Manager of Volunteer Engagement

"A news release from the Canadian Garden Council noted that the award was 'presented to gardens that have excelled in their efforts to cultivate and showcase garden experiences as compelling tourism destinations and truly exemplify the beauty and allure of our continent’s horticultural treasures.'"

Inside Iowa State highlights volunteerism at Reiman Gardens

"[The volunteers] build their own community and a lot of them have become very close friends," Hope said. "We have multigenerational friendships being made because we have a lot of retirees, but also we have Iowa State students and students from Ames High School."

Upcoming Volunteer Needs

Winter Wonderscape

every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening in December

Here we go! This is our busiest event (14 days!), and we love meeting new volunteers and having the leadership of our regulars each night. If you plan to be in Ames this holiday season (especially Dec 21-23 and 28-30), we'd love you to sign up and volunteer with us!

RG volunteers: Sign up for a shift here!
Friends & Family can sign up to volunteer too!

ISO Carpenters, Woodworkers, and Pruners

for 2024

Volunteer at 2023 "Pruning Party"

Do you like pruning? Want to "sharpen" your pruning skills? Let Kim know if you'd like to join Kara's winter "Pruning Parties." Whenever the weather is right this winter, she'll email everyone on the list to schedule a Pruning Party (usually 2-3 hours) to keep our trees and bushes in tip top shape through the winter.

Do you know your way around a piece of wood? Feel comfortable ripping a board? Enjoy hammering a nail into a good piece of lumber? We are attempting to identify our volunteer carpenters and woodworkers (of any skill level)! We have some projects in 2024 that we will need help building and constructing.

Email Kim to identify yourself!

RG Express Train

Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays

If you are trained to monitor the RG Express in the Conservatory, we've added afternoon shifts to Saturdays and Sundays. We'd love for some extra help on these days if you are looking for ways to contribute on the weekends.

All hands on deck!

Volunteer Mission Statement: We envision a world where everyone understands and values the importance of plants, butterflies, and the beauty of nature. We encourage the partnership of employees and volunteers, so that we can achieve our mission and offer the community the best services possible. Volunteers contribute their unique talents, skills, and knowledge of our community to provide personalized attention, enable the paid staff to concentrate on the work for which they were trained, and educate the public about our organization and its cause. We recognize that volunteers provide a resource of talent that is unavailable in any other way. We value this contribution and hope to offer a satisfying, productive, and rewarding experience.
