Volume 056 February 2025

"Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened." – Dr. Seuss

Hello Sheila,

Happy February 2025; the shortest month of the year and a bridging month from one season to the next. February is filled with the promises of spring and a coming rebirth of life. I hope you were you able to experience some restfulness last month and now feel restored with fresh energy.

February brings us into the season of clearing and cleansing. Maybe you have already done some cleaning out in January to bring in the Lunar New Year which began last week on 29 January. Candlemas marks the official end of the Christmas season. St. Brigid's Day and Imbolc recognize the start of the planting season and return of the bees. And let's not forget Groundhog Day. This year, Pancake Day and Ash Wednesday follow close behind in the first days of March.

Following the darkest, coldest days, with the coming light and warmth, a new season commences and our productivity awakens. Just as the farmer must clear the remains of the previous harvest and prepare the soil for the new plantings, it is also a time for us to clear and lay the foundations of the seeds that we are sowing in our lives this year. What has not fallen away naturally must be cleared out to make space for the new growth, buds, and eventually blossoms and harvest.

Focus for February is Release.

We have collectively been experiencing great changes in the world, in our lives in our communities. It’s a whole new world out there. And while we’ve been moving into it for a time now, it can feel very unfamiliar. It’s unfamiliar because there are more openings to grow and expand. That unfamiliarity is also uncomfortable. So much so that it has led to great polarization as there is what appears to be a desperation by some to hang on to the past. This is showing up in many ways and forms. The problem here is that the more we hold onto, the more it drags us down. And that creates a dissonance in conflict with all that is speeding up around us. We must release and move into the new even though we don’t know exactly what’s going to happen.

Release is about letting go. When integrated with gratitude and acceptance it can be manifested peacefully with ease and grace and leads to expansion and freedom. However; when coupled with fear, regret and other negative emotions and belief patterns, it can be painful and agonizing, and lead to depression, stagnation, and loss of vitality.

In the Chinese Zodiac, we have entered into the year of the snake. Snakes, as they grow and mature, shed their skin from time to time to allow space for new growth to take place. During the skin shedding process, any parasites that may have attached to the old skin are also removed. If for any reason the snake does not successfully shed its skin at the appropriate time, natural secretions will act as a glue and the old skin will become stuck to the snake’s body, leading to probable death, and never moving into the next phase of its development.

In the same way, as we grow and mature in our lives, we must experience periods of release. Our physical space and environment may be a good place to start. We tend to hold onto things that have emotional value to us. We are all energetically connected on some level to the things that we possess. Marie Kondo has based her method on the practice of Shintoism which revolves around the expression of the Divine in all things. She advises that “when we really delve into the reasons for why we can’t let something go, there are only two: an attachment to the past or a fear for the future.” Our material possessions can provide feedback as to what memories, emotions, relationships, dreams, sorrows, achievements, and habits we have remained attached to beyond their expiry date. Value is temporary and once something has fulfilled its value in our life, it must be released. By holding onto past experiences, those perceived as either good or difficult, and objects that have diminished value, we remain energetically connected to it.

As a result of all this, we are not able to give appropriate attention to what matters most in the present moment. We may feel drained, distracted, and unfocused. As we experience release and come to understand and be grateful for the lessons that we have learned along the way, both the celebrations and the heartaches, we can cut the energetic cord and be free allowing fresh energy to flow into our present lives.

We are currently experiencing a collective transition and an opportunity to evaluate what needs to be released on a broader universal scale. Rather than holding onto the idea of “things can go back as they were before,” we can honor the growth and experiences of the previous years and decades that we had and release our attachment to it. Space will open up individually and collectively as we recognize and concentrate our attention on what has value each week, and we will gain clarity to the new world that is emerging.

The law of circulation states that things in the universe are always flowing in circulation and at an ever-expanding rate. When we hold onto things for too long, we limit our potential to receive what’s to come and in the case of material goods, by keeping something that we don’t need in the current period of our lives, it prevents others from making use out of them. It blocks the flow of circulation. When pursuing a new career, relationship, lifestyle, hobby, or such, it is appropriate to release and detach from physical, emotional, and spiritual connections from your past situation. This release will create a clean slate and allow ample and abundant energy and creativity to the new exploration.

Challenges of the month - RELEASE

"You leave old habits behind by starting out with the thought, "I release the need for this in my life." - Wayne Dyer

While we experience the process of release that which no longer serves us, we can also think about it in terms of releasing or dealing with obstacles that are blocking progress forward.

Our body, mind, and spirit are all connected. Many things will support more than one simultaneously. Also, when we focus on one area we may find ourselves uplifted in other areas as well. In terms of focusing on release

Choose one challenge focus on for yourself this month. Take a moment and really choose which one most resonates most and may make the greatest impact for yourself. Practice self-compassion. Release is not often instantaneous, but rather a process. Allow the process and be present in each step along the way.

Body

  • Diet - Make a list of your top offenders, those things you know aren't good for you. Choose one or two to release from your regular consumption habits.
  • Movement - dance, spin, shake and jump move and release pent up energy in the body
  • Lifestyle - Do you have any lifestyle habits that may need to be released?
  • Declutter - Remove unnecessary items from your space.

Mind

  • Do you carry negative thought patterns? Every time you recognize a negative thought pattern coming through, write it down and burn the paper or rip it into shreds.
  • Take inventory of reactive behaviors that don't serve you. Do you fly off the handle at the smallest thing and then feel bad about it after? Consider it an opportunity to explore what's going on and take small steps to shift from reacting to responding.
  • No complaining challenge. Do you find yourself complaining often about your life situation or your environment? Make an intention not to complain this month. When you find yourself in the pattern of complaining take a pause and notice what you could be grateful for instead.

Spirit

  • Choose an unresolved issue in your life and take a step towards dealing with it.
  • Make a daily 10 minute breathing practice focusing on deep exhales.
  • Be creative - creative expression allows for a healthy release. Make a point to include practice of your favorite form of creativity in your schedule this month.

Complementary therapies and healing modalities to explore release. Search in your area for these events and therapy experience.

Sound Bath - a meditative experience where participants are immersed in soothing sounds and vibrations from instruments like singing bowls, gongs, and chimes to promote relaxation and healing.

Lymphatic Massage - a gentle, rhythmic massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, helping to reduce swelling, improve circulation, and support detoxification.

Float Tank - an experience that involves floating in a sensory deprivation tank filled with warm, Epsom salt-infused water, creating a weightless, meditative environment that promotes deep relaxation and mental clarity.

I love focusing on just a couple of things at a time. Remember this is about building strong foundations one brick at a time. Continue to stay well hydrated, get plenty of movement throughout the day, don't skimp on sleep, and practice gratitude.

MENU OF THE MONTH:

While we are focusing on release this month, it's a good time to release some of your top offenders even if for a day or a few days. This gives the system a chance to reset.

The digestive system can reset itself in just 5 days when removing sweets and starches from the diet. And while those days may entail some discomfort, once you get through, it's a great feeling with reduced cravings and more stable energy.

These menus, like my coaching sessions are made for you to customize them according to your likes and preferences and what fits best into your life and your regular meals. They are a framework meant to be adjusted.
