Ventura Calif. — The City of Ventura will provide live two-way Spanish interpretation services for all City Council meetings for the next six months, starting on September 26, 2022. No advanced requests for interpretation services will be required.
“The City remains committed to addressing language barriers to ensure all community members have equitable access to City Council meetings,” said Mayor Sofia Rubalcava. “Government needs to be open and accessible to everyone. This effort helps break down language barriers and provides an opportunity for all community members to have a voice and get engaged in local government.”
During the meeting on September 12, the City Council approved a six-month pilot program to help Spanish-speaking residents better understand and engage in the next 12 City Council meetings. The program will extend through the end of February 2023. After six months, the City Council will evaluate the program and discuss whether to make it permanent.
Interpretation services will be available to those joining both virtually and in-person. The City will utilize the WebEx Spanish audio channel for those joining remotely. For in-person attendees, headsets will be available upon entry into the City Council chambers.
In addition to providing live interpretation services, a recording of the meeting will also be available for all City Council meetings on the City’s video recording webpage at www.cityofventura.ca.gov/videos.
Ventura’s City Council meetings are conducted in a hybrid model, with in-person and virtual participation. Meeting information and login details are included on each meeting agenda at www.cityofventura.ca.gov/agendacenter.
