Sara Minkara is a GlobalMindED Ability Status Leader and change maker. She travels the world, on foot or on bicycle, helping others to remove their own impediments. She is an inspirational leader and we are delighted to honor her as we wrap up the lineup of inclusive Ability Status heroes we have profiled in honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Sara, you are a fearless leader as a woman, a Muslim and a blind activist. What is your personal story and how did you become such a high impact global leader?
When people first meet me, they may initially notice that I am a woman. Or perhaps they will first see my blindness, or realize that I am Muslim. But the way others see me does not define me. I am all of those things, and more. Like Walt Whitman said, we all contain multitudes.
Yet most people form their initial impressions of someone new within the first seconds of meeting—and those first impressions are hard to disrupt, frequently becoming biases (however unconscious) rooted in “isms.”
Racism. Sexism. Ableism. Ageism. The list goes on.
But we all have the power to reject those assumptions and instead intentionally open our minds to consider one another more fully, as multidimensional human beings. When we succeed, a whole new world of opportunity and connection is born.
That transformation is at the heart of my life’s work, personally and professionally. Raised by parents who never wanted assumptions about my value and abilities to constrain me, I grew up fully empowered to define myself and understand that nothing is predetermined. With their love and support—soon followed by that of teachers, friends, and collaborated—I have never felt limited, and I have never been limited.
That empowerment has been crucial as I’ve faced numerous challenges, from losing my sight at age seven to a bone marrow transplant just after graduate school. I learned to shift my perspective while living my values—and, every day, I seek out ways to support others in their own journeys.
As an undergraduate I decided I wanted to dedicate time to promote inclusion as a value so I founded a nonprofit organization, Empowerment Through Integration (ETI), through a Clinton Global Initiative grant. More than a decade later, ETI and the programs we have designed are still active in the MENA region, providing social and life skills development for refugees and other children with disabilities. Currently, I am part of the Board of Directors for ETI and I have recently launched a new company (www.saraminkara.com) that provides workshops on authentic inclusion. I want to continue to work to mainstream diversity and inclusion in more places and regions.
You ride your bike. What else do you in refusing to be in any way limited by your lack of sight?
It is all about how one perceives disability. You can always see it from what you don’t have (in my case I cannot see) and not focus on what you do have and what you are able to do. It is this whole aspect of your mindset towards your own being. I think that because of the fact that I focus on what I can do vs what I cannot do, I am able to live a full life, push myself, live adventurously (I have hiked a volcano in Nicaragua, swam with sharks, paraglided in Lebanon, ridden bikes and motorbikes, etc.), always having a mindset of being willing to live a full life and not being limited by what society thinks you can and cannot do.
What do you most want young people to know during these times of multiple pandemics that you have learned on your journey?
There will always be shifts in our political, economic, societal and technological environments. There will always be situations that shake the status quo (financial crisis, pandemic, war, natural disasters). With those challenges, certain voices, certain groups will be further marginalized because it is a new system that needs to be built. The important part is: how do we make sure that the new solutions are integrating everyone and including everyone. They could be seen as opportunities to move towards a more inclusive world. We need to recognize and make sure that all the voices are included. During COVID, the disability community has been further marginalized in many cases. So, let’s work together to make sure that the new systems that are being built are fully inclusive to everyone. That is the key issue.
What do you see as the greatest opportunity for all inclusive leaders—in education, business, government— at this pivotal moment in time?
Inclusion of all is value for all. Companies, educational institutions, governments, society in general really need to understand that when everyone is included, everyone feels that they belong, it is a value for all. Specially for people with a disability, let’s not include them only “because it is the right thing to do”, but because they bring value and it is valuable for everyone. Otherwise, all that potential is lost. If we include people with disabilities as well, we are including 15% of the world’s population. We will benefit from the value they have to contribute. It is a cycle of value. And when we see that, corporations, educational institutions, governments, communities, will want to be more intentional integrating that perspective and will see it as less of a burden. It has been proven that when we include people with disabilities in the workspace, more human and economic value is created.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
