RECAP K-2
The birthday and independence day of Israel is this Thursday! It is known as Yom Ha'atzmaut. The students observed the flag of Israel and learned why it is blue and white with the Star of David as its center. Ask your child what they learned about Israel and how we celebrated Israel in class! They saw different cites of modern day Israel and created Israeli and Israeli-inspired flags. They learned about the capital of Israel and sang the national anthem: Hatikvah, which means The Hope. As a school, we practiced singing prayers for the May 16 Shabbat service. Your child will help lead services that Friday evening at 6:15 PM! Please RSVP Here to let us know that your child will be attending. For next Sunday, the students are eager to participate in an online game created by me on Kahoot. If they could bring in an electronic device to play the game from and earn points, it would be helpful for them to answer questions about the holidays, Jewish values, and Hebrew letters they learned this school year. If your child can't bring an electronic device, that's ok. We will share. Check out the Chaverim Youth Group Pictures below to see how much fun your child had "tasting Israel" on Sunday!
RECAP 3-6
On Sunday, our 3rd–6th grade students continued preparing to lead the Friday night Shabbat service on May 16. Each student is focusing on the prayers they feel most confident in and is excited to share their learning with the congregation. Please RSVP Here to let us know that your child will be attending.
In honor of יום העצמאות (Yom HaAtzmaut – Israeli Independence Day) beginning Thursday night, May 1, we spent meaningful time with Uri, our shinshin, hearing about how he celebrated this holiday growing up and how traditions have changed over time. We also explored the important connections to יום הזיכרון (Yom HaZikaron – Israel’s Memorial Day) and יום השואה (Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Remembrance Day). As part of Yom HaZikaron, students listened to the memorial siren and stood in silence (זכור – Zachor – “Remember”) to honor those lost in Israel’s wars.
Ask your child if they can tell you about these three special days and what they mean to them. We also engaged in deep conversations about what it means to be Jewish today—discussing pride, challenges, and how they see themselves in connection to Judaism and Israel.
In Hebrew, Alex’s class worked hard on reading fluency. Please help your child review their letters, sounds, and practice reading from their Hebrew book at home. Don’t forget to bring Hebrew books back next week!
Morah Marla's class continued practicing prayers. Students are moving at their own pace but we see wonderful advancement happening. Ask your child what prayers they have mastered and what prayer they are working on.
On Tuesday, students practiced for the May 16 service, as well as individual practice at their personal reading level. We learned about the Torah portion, Tazria, that emphasizes consequences. Ask your child about the portion and how they feel about consequences.
