GRADES K-2 RECAP
Ms. Yenth'l
Rosh Chodesh means Head of the Month and celebrates a new month in the Jewish calendar. Our Jewish calendar is based on the cycles of the moon. This concept of a lunar-based calendar was explored in class and as a treat the students created some phases of the moon using Oreo cookies! We looked at the solar calendar and saw that this month its numbers align with the Jewish lunar calendar. The students learned some names of the Hebrew months; we are currently in the month of Tevet!
Some Hebrew words learned this week were: kohav (star); lo (no); g'lida (ice cream); and kiseh (chair)! The students tried to write the beginning of each word and it was a great beginning skill to practice and learn how Hebrew letters are formed and written from right to left. We will continue learning more letter names and their sounds for the rest of the school year.
The students also participated in Havdalah and practiced singing songs for this ritual, as well as Shabbat songs to begin to prepare for our Shabbat service on May 16!
GRADES 3-6 TUESDAY RECAP
Morah Marla, Alex, and Ms. Koota
On Sunday, we began with T'filah and Havdalah. Then we practiced singing some songs and prayers for our Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat service that will take place on May 16. Then our shinshin, Uri, led us in a fun "feelings" game where we learned how to express how we are feeling in Hebrew. Ask your child if they can tell you how they are feeling today in Hebrew. Then we broke into Hebrew groups to practice letter vowel recognition, reading and prayers. Please remind your child to practice Hebrew in between classes and to bring their Hebrew books to class every Sunday and Tuesday.
On Tuesday, we focused on Hebrew skills by singing the Alef-Bet song, reviewing letter sounds and vowels, and using blocks to create our own Hebrew words. It was interactive and engaging and made learning Hebrew fun! We have finally reached the book of Exodus and were introduced to Moses’ early life until reaching adulthood. When Moses left Egypt he encountered the burning bush where he spoke with God. Moses was reluctant to carry out God’s commands to free the Hebrew people. Ask your child why Moses resisted? Moses’ brother Aaron was a big support to Moses. It is here that we learn the value of both being supportive to others and letting others help and support us.
CHAVERIM YOUTH GROUP RECAP
Carly Danowitz
Our K-6th Graders had a great time at Chaverim Youth Group on Sunday. To prepare for the upcoming holiday of Tu Bishvat, the students made "edible dirt" and decorated pots and planted parsley seeds. Ask your child how they made the edible dirt and why we planted parsley seeds (answer: so that the parsley will grow in time to use for Passover). They also went on a nature walk. You can see pictures from the event by clicking on the Chaverim Youth Group Photos box below. We hope everybody will join us on February 23 for our next event: SUNDAE SUNDAY!
