Dear Ones,

I pray you are well this week. You are receiving this while I am in Minnesota for a couple days to be with my brother and sister on my mother's 'death-aversary' tomorrow. It is hard to believe that it has been a whole year without her.

This grief journey has been different than any other - and one I never anticipated. I spent the first months feeling entirely untethered. Who did I belong to anymore? The one who had known and loved me the longest was gone. While I had a rich and loving relationship with my dad too, Mom and I understood each other differently. Well, we did after I finally aged up! We struggled when I was young, but wouldn't you know it: when I was in labor with my first child, she was the only voice I wanted to hear in the middle of the night. We had finally come to understand I needed a C-section because Christopher was stuck and so at 3am, I called my mom. We have been profoundly connected ever since.

So learning to live without her in my daily life has been a challenge. Countless of you have shared with me that similar feeling of being untethered even years later. That you still wish today you could call her or even think, "I've got to call mom" and then realize the loss anew. Others have shared a sense of grief that they have not had that loving relationship with their mother, so their experience of loss has been or will be different than what I have described. It is never not acutely painful...no matter our situations.

But I can also look back at this year and be so humbled and grateful by the folks who held me in my sorrow. Two dear old friends who flew into Minnesota just for Mom's funeral. Others who have texted regularly over the course of the year to check in. Those that I can call just to say, "this new reality is SO WEIRD and I don't love it." and their supportive responses. And all of you have been tender and thoughtful, kind and respectful, and blessedly generous with your hugs! So many of you immediately thought to tell me last week how proud my mom and dad would be of me. You made and make a difference on this journey. And I'm so grateful.

Death is the inevitability for all of us. So if you know grief, loss, sorrow, no matter how complicated it is, know that you're not alone. Lean on your people. Give thanks when you can. Take it at your own pace. Allow the tears. Allow the laughter. Stay gentle with yourself.

Next week, we will all go to the foot of the cross together in grief. We will then find the tomb empty together as well. Resurrection life is the promise that we can all hold fast to - for Jesus, for those we love, and for our own selves.

It is a gift beyond measure: thanks be to God.

Espero que estés bien esta semana. Recibirás este mensaje mientras estoy en Minnesota por un par de días para estar con mi hermano y mi hermana con motivo del aniversario de la muerte de mi madre, que se celebra mañana. Cuesta creer que ya haya pasado un año entero sin ella.

Este proceso de duelo ha sido diferente a cualquier otro, y uno que nunca anticipé. Pasé los primeros meses sintiéndome completamente desorientada. ¿A quién le pertenecía ya? La persona que me había conocido y amado durante más tiempo se había ido. Aunque también tenía una relación rica y amorosa con mi papá, mamá y yo nos entendíamos de manera diferente. Bueno, ¡lo hicimos después de que finalmente crecí! Tuvimos dificultades cuando era joven, pero ¿quién lo diría? Cuando estaba de parto con mi primer hijo, ella era la única voz que quería escuchar en medio de la noche. Finalmente habíamos llegado a la conclusión de que necesitaba una cesárea porque Christopher estaba atascado, así que a las 3 de la madrugada llamé a mi mamá. Desde entonces hemos estado profundamente conectadas.

Así que aprender a vivir sin ella en mi día a día ha sido todo un reto. Muchos de ustedes me han contado que siguen sintiéndose igual de desorientados, incluso años después. Que aún hoy desean poder llamarla o incluso piensan: «Tengo que llamar a mamá», y entonces vuelven a darse cuenta de la pérdida. Otros han compartido un sentimiento de dolor por no haber tenido esa relación amorosa con su madre, por lo que su experiencia de pérdida ha sido o será diferente a la que he descrito. Nunca deja de ser profundamente doloroso... sin importar nuestras situaciones.

Pero también puedo mirar atrás a este año y sentirme tan humilde y agradecida por las personas que me apoyaron en mi dolor. Dos queridos viejos amigos que volaron a Minnesota solo para el funeral de mamá. Otros que me han enviado mensajes de texto regularmente a lo largo del año para ver cómo estaba. Aquellos a quienes puedo llamar solo para decir: «Esta nueva realidad es TAN EXTRAÑA y no me gusta», y sus respuestas de apoyo. ¡Y todos ustedes han sido tiernos y considerados, amables y respetuosos, y benditamente generosos con sus abrazos! Muchos de ustedes pensaron inmediatamente en decirme la semana pasada lo orgullosos que estarían mis padres de mí. Ustedes marcaron y marcan la diferencia en este viaje. Y estoy muy agradecida.

La muerte es algo inevitable para todos nosotros. Así que, si estás pasando por un duelo, una pérdida o un dolor, por muy complicado que sea, ten claro que no estás solo. Apóyate en tus seres queridos. Da gracias cuando puedas. Tómate tu tiempo. Deja que fluyan las lágrimas. Deja que fluyan las risas. Sé amable contigo mismo.

La próxima semana, todos iremos juntos al pie de la cruz en medio del dolor. Entonces, también encontraremos juntos la tumba vacía. La vida de la resurrección es la promesa a la que todos podemos aferrarnos: por Jesús, por aquellos a quienes amamos y por nosotros mismos.

Es un regalo inconmensurable: gracias a Dios.
