Notes from the Editor:

I've been enjoying these nippy 71-degree mornings, knowing it will still be swimming weather (if I can work around the lightning) later in the day. With September comes a reminder to keep an eye on the Arts Blast calendar for holiday gifting ideas. Schedules are rolling in!

Arts Blast alternates with On the Arts Blast Calendar off season but look for extra Arts Blasts.

Kudos to Ballet Vero Beach

Ballet Vero Beach has been selected to present its "Stage to Page" program and "Fellowship Initiative for Dancers" at the 2022 National Convening for the Arts Education Partnership which will be held September 14 and 15 in Baltimore, MD. Artistic Director Adam Schnell said, “Ballet Vero Beach was chosen from applicants across the country for our unique approach to arts education and specifically our groundbreaking work with arts integration and arts literacy.”

From the AEP:

The Arts Education Partnership is a national network of more than 100 organizations dedicated to advancing arts education. AEP has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Education since 1995 and is administered by Education Commission of the States.

AEP is the nation’s hub for arts and education leaders, building their leadership capacity to support students, educators and learning environments. Through research, reports, convenings and counsel, leaders gain knowledge and insights to ensure that all learners receive an excellent arts education.

The Arts Education Partnership (AEP) was established in 1995 through a unique interagency agreement between the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Education … . The founding organizations continue to provide support and promote AEP as the nation’s hub for individuals and organizations committed to making high-quality arts education accessible to all U.S. students.

In 2015, the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Education selected Education Commission of the States to serve as the new host organization for AEP.

Ballet Vero Beach is committed to inspiring the next generation of artists and arts lovers. Each season we provide three absolutely free student matinee performances. The goal of our Student Matinee Series is to provide each and every 1st, 3rd, and 4th grader living in Indian River County a meaningful professional arts experience and additional on campus engagement each year. This program is open to all public, private, charter, or home school students, and transportation scholarships are available on a first come, first served basis.

Ballet Vero Beach is thrilled to be working with The Learning Alliance to transform our Student Matinee Series into the Stage to Page program. This program provides the highest quality arts exposure while folding in additional engagement using arts integration techniques to combat the early literacy problem in our community.

Riverside Theatre for Kids presents Playtime in the Park, a brand new FREE program for the community’s youngest audience members.

A Milestone for Talkin' Birds

This weekend will mark the 900th broadcast of Talkin' Birds, a long-time Arts Blast supporter, although not as long as it took to produce 900 weekly programs!

Congratulations to Ray Brown and his sterling (starling?) crew for this important contribution to the conservation of the winged wonders we love to watch, count, and depict in artwork. Chirps to many more, Ray!

As an aside, Ray, based in Boston but heard everywhere, once narrated Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus with the Boston Pops!

And speaking of birds in art, the Pelican Island Conservation Society (PICS) Annual Indian River Bird and Nature Art Show will be at the Environmental Learning Center in Wabasso Monday October 3rd - Saturday Oct 29th. The show is held in October each year around the National Wildlife Refuge Week, October 9-15 this year.

There will be an artists reception Oct. 7, 4:30-6:30 p.m., with Ruth Stanbridge as featured speaker at 7. She will talk about Jungle Trail, "the history of a trail that turned into a commercial corridor for agriculture, ... a gateway for tourists, treasure hunters, and today's winter residents." Other events are planned for the month-long event including several sunset wine and cheese pontoon cruises to Pelican Island.

For more information, email Debbie Avery or PICS, or call the Environmental Learning Center at 772-589-5050.

For many who remember that devastating morning in 2001, it’s impossible to believe that an entire generation of years has passed since the unthinkable happened in the United States.

This weekend, the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Aaron Collins will pay tribute to “the victims and survivors, their families, and emergency responders, whose lives were forever impacted on that tragic day.” The Remembering 9/11 program will begin with the moving Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber, performed in its original form for string quartet.

On the program is Kenneth Fuchs’ Falling Man, a series of arias and interludes written for voice and orchestra, “inspired by the 2007 novel about life after 9/11 by Don DeLillo,” Collins said. Fuchs had lived in New York City for twenty years. Falling Man was presented at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of 9/11. This performance will feature baritone Thomas Potter, who has performed all over the world in concerts and fully staged operas. In 2005, he joined the University of Central Florida as director of the UCF Opera and vocal instructor.

Also on the program are Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man and John Williams’ Lincoln: With Malice Toward None.

The concert will end with a personal favorite of the conductor, Barber’s Symphony No.1, “a compelling work with unbridled energy and heart-on-sleeve passion.” Collins said, “We hope you will join us for this important and unforgettable program. It will be a deeply moving tribute to those we lost. Your attendance would mean the world to us ….” These concerts are part of the Symphony for Everyone program, “designed to provide complimentary or discounted Symphony tickets to those who may otherwise not be able to attend a Symphony performance. Essentially, pay what you can!” The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra’s philosophy is that everyone should have the opportunity to attend a symphony orchestra concert regardless of ability to pay. Details are online.

The Board of Directors and Music Director Dr. Michael Carter have announced that a full three-concert schedule is ready for the 2022-2023 season. This music group, now into its 21st year in Vero Beach, had been in hiatus for two years, returning to First Baptist Church in Vero Beach last spring. The first rehearsal has been called for Monday, September 12 at 7 p.m. No audition is required to join the chorale but Dr. Carter will work with each new singer to determine where they fit into the four-part harmony traditional to our selections.

There is an annual fee of $60 and women must purchase a special costume. Our men look very elegant in their tuxedos.

All concerts are held at the First Baptist Church, 2206 16th Avenue, Vero Beach at 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Doors will open at 3 p.m. for early seating and all concerts are free with no tickets required. A donation will be requested during the concert.

Anyone who has some experience with choral or choir singing and enjoys the style of music that we offer is welcome to come to a rehearsal on Monday, September 12 at 7 pm at First Baptist Church. Please call Dr. Michael Carter at 772-567-4341 or Sally at 772-231-3498 for directions and informational detail as to the meeting place.
