Bill Streeter, Co-op Member-Owner #1

Bill Streeter passed away this past Saturday.

Bill and his wife, Elaine, ran the Cummington General Store from 1954 to 1962 in the very building that is now the Old Creamery Cooperative. T his building began as a cooperative in 1886, when the Cummington Cooperative Creamery was co-founded by  Bill's great-great-grandfather Henry, his great-uncle Charles Cotton Streeter, and many other local dairy farmers. At its peak, that co-op included 145 dairies in our Hilltowns and cooperatively produced 20,000 pounds of butter each month. This butter was distributed widely by horse-drawn carriage,
reaching as far as Boston and New York City.
This history (click here to read more) is why we were
 very proud to have
Bill Streeter as member-owner #1.

You can hear Bill talk about his life and the history of the Creamery
in this delightful interview from 2013,
conducted by Bill Latimer and filmed by Rose Wessel.

Read Bill's obituary, published in the Gazette on Wednesday.

The portrait above by Jeanne Johns, artist (and Hilltowner whenever she is able), is the cover for the book My Good Friend Bill: The Life of a Restless Yankee written by Bill's friend Paul Schratter.
The Creamery has a single copy left in the store as of this newsletter, but more are on the way. If you would like us to hold a copy for you,
please click here.

We Need the State to Deliver on Broadband Internet!

Your action required below

Susan Crawford recently published this article
analyzing what the Massachusetts Broadband Institute
is (not) doing to deliver quality high-speed
internet to the towns of Western Massachusetts.

"This is the story of a dramatic failure of imagination and vision at the state level: Governor Charlie Baker's apparent insistence that Massachusetts relegate small towns to second-rate, high-priced, monopoly-controlled (and unregulated) communications capacity. It's a slow-rolling tragedy that will blight Western Mass. for generations. The likely outcome: Only those plucky, scrappy towns that elect to build on their own will escape the grip of unconstrained pricing for awful service."

Crawford says the agency is on the cusp of the
next round of funding decisions.

Flood Governor Baker with your messages "Western Mass needs real high speed internet service, let the towns do it!"
And let your Massachusetts State House legislator know how you feel.
Locate your local legislator's contact information here.

ADDITIONAL ACTION: Forward this message to your friends and ask them to message Governor Baker.
