Remembering Fr. Dmitry Grigorieff

The name of the Very Reverend Dmitry Grigorieff, Dean and Dean Emeritus of St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral in our Nation’s Capital from 1978 to 2007, is still in the hearts and on the lips of many, though fourteen years have passed since his death. Fr. Dmitry was born on May 14, 1919 in England, and his childhood and youth were spent in Riga, the capital of Latvia.

Before the beginning of the Second World War he found himself in Australia, and towards the end of the war sailed the Atlantic towards America’s shores as a steward on an old American destroyer sent to Britain under the Lend-Lease Act of 1941. In 1945 he came to New York to continue his education. His lay education in Linguistics and Comparative Literature was completed at Yale University, while his theological education, begun in Riga, was completed at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Seminary.

He received his doctorate from one of America’s best universities, the University of Pennsylvania. It must be said that during all these years he not only studied, but worked as well, teaching Russian language and literature in various schools. A deep faith in God, planted by his family, took root in his soul in childhood and was carried throughout his life. No matter where fate brought him, his first home in any new location was the Church.

Fr. Alexander Schmemann, well-known in theological and clergy circles, was his first spiritual father in America, though their difference in age was negligible. Fr. Alexander officiated the marriage of Dmitry Grigorieff and Galina Bogdanovich, his beautiful bride from New Zealand, who became his faithful friend and Matushka. Fr. Dmitry became a priest at the age of 50; as he himself said, he was not ready before then. As fate would have it, he was offered a position as professor at Georgetown University and concurrently became provost at St. Nicholas, a trustworthy helper to the beloved Dean, Fr. Arkady Moiseev.

Matushka Galina was from a believing, artistic Russian family which found itself in New Zealand after the war. In Tallinn before the war, along with her father, she participated in performances, danced, sang, was blessed with a good voice, played a variety of musical instruments and, most importantly for her future life, knew church music. The parishioners of St. Nicholas embraced the new priest and his Matushka from their hearts; the parish grew and strengthened, and their small house on Onondaga Street in Bethesda became the center of church, spiritual and cultural life not only for both old and new parishioners, but for employees of the Russian embassy, whom Fr. Dmitry baptized and married in secret during the years of atheism under the Soviet regime, and for all Orthodox and non-Orthodox in the metropolitan area.

Fr. Dmitry preached with faith that the Church was the only moral entity uniting people, granting them empathy and mercy. The words “love God, treat one another with love and patience” could be heard in all of his sermons. Thanks to his efforts, services began to be served in both English and Russian. Thanks to his creative talents and good taste, parishioners enjoyed a beautiful Cathedral and Bell Tower, which today are among Washington’s notable landmarks. Fr. Dmitry gave generously of the full depth of his Orthodox faith, his intellect, his deep knowledge of history, literature, and poetry, and his spiritual warmth to people and to service to the Church.

There have been different periods in the history of St. Nicholas, as there have been in the history of mankind, on both this and the other side of the ocean, as the saying goes. Today, when one walks into the Cathedral he is spiritually uplifted by the beauty of the interior, the scriptural readings, the hymns and the prayers to Jesus and the Theotokos. The names of the founders and those who served at St. Nicholas live on in all of these spiritual dimensions, and among these names is the name of Fr. Dmitry Grigorieff. Let us say, on the anniversary of his repose, “May his memory be eternal before God!”

It is impossible to give all the details of the life and work of Fr. Dmitry in such a short write-up, to describe his sermons, his university lectures, the articles and books written by him, and his participation in international church and literary conferences on the subject of his favorite author, Fyodor Dostoevsky. A more complete picture of his work can be seen in three documentary films: “Very Rev. Dmitry Grigorieff. The Last Liturgy”, “Very Rev. Dmitry Grigorieff. Orthodox America” and “Fatherland in Exile”. Вспоминая Отца Дмитрия Григорьева

Имя протоиерея Дмитрия Григорьева, настоятеля и почетного настоятеля Свято-Николаевского православного собора в столице США Вашингтоне (1978-2007 годы) до сих пор у многих в сердцах и на устах, хотя прошло уже 14 лет со дня его кончины. О. Дмитрий Григорьев родился 14 мая 1919 года в Англии, его детство и юность прошли в Риге, столице Латвии.

Перед началом Второй Мировой войны он оказался в Австралии, а ближе к концу войны плавал стюартом на хлипких суденышках Лендлиза по Атлантике к Американским берегам. В 1945-ом он остался в Нью-Йорке, чтобы продолжить образование. Светское, филологическое образование он получил в Йельском университете, богословское , начатое в Риге, завершил в Свято-Владимирской духовной академии.

Докторскую степень он получил в одном из лучших в Америке - Филадельфийском университете. Нужно сказать , что все эти годы он не только учился, но и работал, преподавая русский язык и литературу в разных школах. Глубокая вера в Бога пришла в его душу с детства, он получил ее основы в семье и пронес через всю жизнь. Куда бы не приводила его судьба, первым домом на новом месте для него был Храм Божий.

Его первым в Америке духовным отцом и другом стал о. Александр Шмеман, известный в мире богослов и священник, хотя разница в возрасте у них была незначительная. О. Александр повенчал Дмитрия Григорьева с Галиной Богданович, красавицей-невестой из Новой Зеландии, которая стала верной подругой и матушкой. О. Дмитрий вступил в священный сан в пятидесятилетнем возрасте, раньше, как он сам говорил, он был не готов. Так совпало в его судьбе, что он получил место профессора в университете Джордж Таун и в то же время стал ключарем в Свято – Николаевском соборе, надежным помощником старенького, почти слепого настоятеля о. Аркадия Моисеева.

Матушка Галина была родом из верующей русской артистической семьи, волею судьбы оказавшейся после войны в Новой Зеландии. Она вместе со своим отцом еще до войны в Таллине участвовала в спектаклях, танцевала, пела, обладала хорошим голосом , играла на разных музыкальных инструментах и, что оказалось особенно полезно, знала духовные песнопения. Прихожане всем сердцем полюбили нового священника и матушку, община росла и крепла, их маленький домик на улице Онондаго в Бесезде стал центром церковной, духовной и культурной жизни не только для старых и новых прихожан собора, но и для сотрудников российского посольства, которых о. Дмитрий в годы советского государственного атеизма, тайно крестил и венчал, и для всех православных и инославных жителей Большого Вашингтона.

Силою веры о. Дмитрий убеждал, что храм Божий - это единый стержень, объединяющий людей, дарующий им сострадание и милосердие. Слова: «любите Бога, относитесь с любовью и терпением друг к другу» звучали в каждой его проповеди. Благодаря его усилиям службы проходили на двух языках: русском и английском. Благодаря его творческому таланту и хорошему вкусу прихожане получили боголепный храм и колокольню, которые сегодня являются одной из достопримечательностей Вашингтона. Всю силу веры православной, весь свой интеллект, глубокое знание истории, литературы, поэзии, душевное тепло он щедро отдавал людям и церковному служению.

В истории Свято-Николаевского собора были разные периоды, как вообще в историческом цикле жизни людей по эту и по другую стороны океана, как это было принято говорить. Сегодня, вошедших в храм, одухотворяет благолепие внутреннего убранства, чтение, песнопение и молитвы Господу и Богородице. И во всей этой духовной ипостаси живут имена созидателей и служащих Свято-Николаевского собора, среди которых значится имя протоиерея Дмитрия Григорьева. В годовщину его смерти скажем: «Вечная ему память.»

В короткой заметке невозможно рассказать подробно о жизни и делах о. Дмитрия, о его церковных проповедях, университетских лекциях, статьях и книгах им написанных , участии и выступлениях на международных церковных и литературных конференциях, посвященных творчеству его любимого писателя Ф.М. Достоевского. Более широкую картину деятельности о. Дмитрия можно увидеть в трех документальных кинолентах: «Протоиерей Дмитрий Григорьев. Последняя литургия», Протоиерей Дмитрий Григорьев «Православная Америка» и «Отчизна на чужбине». Все три фильма сделаны в Москве.
