REMEMBERING GWEN IFILL

This week the communications industry lost one of its most respected media icons. The passing of renowned journalist, Gwen Ifill shocked many within our industry. A Peabody award-winning journalist, television newscaster and author, Ms. Ifill was a trailblazer. In 1999, she became the first African-American woman to host a nationally televised U.S. public affairs program, "Washington Week in Review." In 2004, she was the first black woman to moderate a vice presidential debate between Republican candidate, Dick Cheney and the Democratic candidate, Senator John Edwards.

Ms. Ifill will not only be remembered for the indelible mark she made in the communications field, but also thought of as the consummate professional whose persona illuminated brightly.

In the words of Ms. Ifill: "You can be the person who turns toward, not away, from the chance to rise above the fray. And you can be the person who trains yet another generation to do better at it than you did."

On behalf of NAMIC, I offer heartfelt condolences to Ms. Ifill's family and colleagues.
