Dear Wisdom Way Martial Arts Family & Friends:
Six years ago today, I lost one of my best friends, my mentor, my coach, my brother. Joseph Henry Lewis was called home by God at 10:45am on Friday, August 31, 2012, after a courageous 13 1/2 month battle with brain cancer.
Joe Lewis achieved many great things during his shorter than expected life. From being the world's very first Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion to twice being named as the greatest karate fighter of all time by his peers to becoming one of the most sought after professors of martial arts on the planet. But those of us who knew Joe best know that he always considered his two greatest accomplishments to be his beautiful children - his son, Cameron, and his daughter, Kristina.
Joe taught us many things while he was with us. He taught us how to fight strategically and with conviction, he taught us how to win with humility and grace, he taught us how to grow from our defeats, he taught us how to teach with care and compassion, he taught us how to live with love and passion, and in the end, he taught us how to die with courage and dignity. The world will never know another Joe Lewis. And I am confident that the Joe Lewis we knew will never be forgotten.
On this six-year anniversary of my dear friend's passing, I wanted take a moment to remind Joe that his memory endures, that I love him and miss him, and that I am so very grateful for the 15 years I had the opportunity to be one of his "guys".
Godspeed, Big Joe. Until we meet again....
