In Loving Memory of Lucius

July 2026 Newsletter

Greetings!

“If you carry joy in your heart you can heal any moment.”

— Neale Donald Walsch

Last month was an incredibly challenging one for all of us here at Stand InBalance, as we lost a most beloved member of the herd, Lucius. See more in his tribute below and visit his memorial page.

It may seem strange to be choosing Joy as the topic for this month, in light of such sad and difficult recent events, but when we think about Lu - who he was and everything that he stood for - we feel it is fitting to choose Joy, because that's what Lu would do.
Lucius was always finding the joy, curiosity, intrigue and play in life and he had a way of bringing it out in others, too. He loved shared grooming, a delicious snack and spending time with his equine and human friends alike. He knew how to live, paying attention and appreciating every moment - finding the joy in the smallest of things.

In dedication to, and in memory of him, we hope that you will also make a point choose joy. Although sometimes it can be harder than others to find, joy is always available —waiting for us to notice and open up to it. We've shared some articles below for inspiration, but if you had the good fortune of knowing Lucius embodying his spirit should be enough.

May you connect with Joy this July,

Dr. Val

"The gloom of the world is but a shadow;
behind it, yet within our reach, is Joy." - Fra Giovanni

Joy is a primary emotion. Think of babies (or puppies). Most of the time, they are pretty joyful without needing anything special, except for their basic needs to be met. That joy exists within each & every one of us. We don't need a fancy car or some external pleasure to be joyful. We only need to learn to access the joy already within us. It may seem too good to be true - but it is possible and it becomes easier and easier with practice. Give it a try, you may like your results!

Here are 7 steps to unlock your inner JOY!

#1 - LET GO

Everything that you are holding on to, that you are trying to control, that you are struggling with, is keeping you from your joy. Stop trying so hard to make something a certain way. Let go of your preconceived expectations. Let go of your worries about the outcome. Let go of perfection. When we let go, we create space for joy to enter. Joy will come when we allow it to.

#2 - OPEN TO POSSIBILITY

Don't shut joy out before it's even had a chance to appear. Often we close the door on possibilities... (read more)

Horses Teach Us:

The joy of connection. When communication is achieved or understood, a feeling of accomplishment happens, we are both being heard and listened to.

The joy of simple pleasures. That sometimes a good roll in the dirt with an awesome buck-fart while racing around with a friend is enough to make a difference in a day. Or that every carrot is like the first carrot they've ever had.

The joy of freedom and being in relation with one another through trust and acceptance without judgment.
They remind us that joy can happen at any given moment.

In the Workplace
Joy. It's not necessarily a word that people think of synonymously with the word "workplace". For the purposes of this article, we are going to use the word joy as defined by Merriam-Webster, "the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires".

Why wouldn't we want joy in the workplace, considering that we spend about 1/3 of our waking hours there?

And then there's the number one killer of joy in the workplace - fear. Have you ever worked somewhere where you felt your every action was scrutinized, you were in a state of constant worry over keeping your job, or where you were openly reprimanded? These are all symptoms of fear-based workplace cultures, also known as joy-killing environments. How do you let go of fear and find your joy in the workplace?

Remembering our beloved Lucius

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Lucius, the leader of the Stand InBalance herd.

After nearly 7 months of intensive stall rest in an effort to heal an injury to his hock tendon, Lucius crossed the rainbow bridge on Friday June 12th, surrounded by his herd. Arguably the most handsome and mischievous horse there ever was, Lu was loved by all who had the good fortune of knowing him and will be painfully missed by a great many.

Lucius led with his heart and had a special way with each member of the herd, equine and human alike. He was a perfect example of a leader who “leads with love” and embodied the essence of Stand InBalance. Lu’s lessons about boundaries and leadership were always front and center. His size was intimidating to many and was often seen as a “challenge” to overcome, but his wisdom, patience and charm always shone through, giving way to a gentle nudge with his nose, a deep exhale or a step up onto the wooden stump (a trick he loved to impress with and used many times as he wooed Lady to become his one and only!). One of the many things that made Lucius so special was how he became meaningful to each person he met in a way that was specific to them, but no matter how your story with him went, it was always a memorable journey.

Lu loved life and made the most of every moment up until the very end. He loved sharing breath, stealing everybody’s food, and he especially loved treats and good belly scratches. He and his memory will continue to be an inspiration for joy and play, reminding us to be curious and to find delight in the world around us, even in difficult times.

We hope that his joyful spirit and all of the happy memories he has made with us will help to carry all who loved him through this time of grief.

Success Stories
“By spending time with the horses, and having the Stand InBalance team help reflect the dynamic taking place, I learned a great deal about myself. I felt more connected and strong in myself and in my relationship with others. Most importantly I learned that I am OK and good enough the way I am. These lessons exceeded my expectations of what the experience would be like, and I will apply them in my life.”
~ April
“The Authenticity workshop was an amazing experience I would recommend to all people - It will be life changing! Prior to the workshop, I was feeling lost and really needed to find myself after going through some career changes and marital problems. Talking in the group and working with the horses got me in touch with my assertiveness and helped me to ground myself and learn to trust myself more. Finding myself in this way, gave me the courage not to be afraid in my relationships with others. I received powerful and unexpected lessons from the workshop. I learned I can lean in to my leadership gifts and use my energies wisely and that it’s not a performance, it’s a process”
