Remembering Nate McPhee and Supporting His Family
Our colleague and friend, Nate McPhee, unexpectedly passed away on April 13, 2022 in a tragic car accident, leaving behind four young daughters, Mellissa, Paige, Emma and Sophie.
We are devastated by the loss of Nate. He joined our Casella Construction family in February, as part of the Cummings & Son crew. He was a talented Rutland High School athlete, having earned a spot on the Shrine football team. Nate also enjoyed woodcarving, hunting, fishing, camping, playing softball, and was an avid bowler in several leagues. He was an experienced tree climber on the land clearing team.
His family is dealing with the extreme shock of losing Nate, and trying to process how to move forward without him. His daughters have started a GoFundMe page to help with the heavy financial burden they are facing.

Nate's family needs our support. If you have the ability, please consider making a donation. No amount is too small, and if we rally together, we can help make a difference for his kids.
The services for Nate are today, Thursday, April 21st from 4pm-7pm (services start at 7pm) at Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland, Vermont.

There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, April 23rd at the Moose Club in Rutland, Vermont.
Our thoughts are with Nate's family, friends, and all who loved him during this difficult time.

Safety Topic: Weather Conditions & Mud
Weather can create many hazards and slow down production for construction sites and other work sites that are outdoors. This is especially true when rain creates excessively muddy conditions. There are many hazards to consider if work is going to take place in muddy conditions:
  • Equipment/vehicle crashes or over-turn. Traction and control are greatly reduced when operating in mud.
  • Slips, trips & falls. Walking around or getting into equipment in the mud can lead to slipping or falling.
  • Sprains/strains. Many people will pull muscles due to getting their boots stuck in mud and trying to yank them out. Falling over with your feet stuck in awkward positions can lead to suffering a sprain or strain injury.
Can you answer the question from this week's safety discussion?
What is a best practice when working in the mud?
If your foot gets stuck in the mud, yank hard on it to free it
Either make sure equipment steps are clear of mud, or use 3 points of contact
In muddy conditions, closely inspect all excavations prior to starting work
Reminder: Submit your Good Catch/Near Misses
We only have 2 Good Catch/Near Miss submissions for the month of April. Please remember to continue to submit them to your supervisor!
