REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY

In commemoration of the August 3, 2019, mass shooting that claimed the lives of 23 friends, neighbors, and loved ones, the City of El Paso and the Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR) are co-hosting a Remembrance Ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the August 3rd Memorial at Jim Crouch Park, 7500 W.H. Burges.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony that will include remarks from Mayor Renard Johnson, the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso, and BNHR Executive Director Fernando Garcia.

As part of the ceremony, the names of the 23 victims will be read aloud, with a ceremonial bell tolling after each name and the release of doves after a moment of silence. In addition, BNHR will lead its annual Community Memorial Procession, featuring 23 monumental crosses representing each of the lives lost. This solemn march serves as a heartfelt tribute to the victims and a renewed call to action against violence and hatred. Community members will come together in solidarity to honor those we lost and reaffirm their commitment to justice and unity.

Introducing Our New Economic Development Liaison!

The Economic & International Development Department is proud to introduce Dio Treviño as its newest Economic Development Liaison. Dio holds a B.S. in neuroscience with a concentration in nutrition and grew up in El Paso, where he developed a deep passion for the region’s rich binational culture. He brings a hospitality-driven approach to his role, guided by experience working in the service industry and at Workforce Solutions Borderplex as a project assistant on a high-impact upskilling program for small businesses.

In his role as liaison, Dio helps local businesses connect with resources offered by Entrepreneur Support Organizations (ESOs). Through tailored guidance and strong collaboration with community partners, he supports business resilience, fosters growth, and expands access to opportunity throughout the region.

When he's not supporting entrepreneurs, Dio enjoys playing the guitar—a creative outlet that reflects his upbeat and approachable personality. His contributions will be invaluable to our mission of fostering long‑term success for El Paso’s small business ecosystem. We’re delighted to have him on board!

Connect with him today to schedule a business site visit and learn how the Economic Development Liaison team can help support your business growth.
