To the Pace Community,

It is with deep sadness that I write to share the passing of Richard L. Ottinger, public servant, environmental pioneer, former dean of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, and a transformative figure in the life of our university.

Dean Emeritus Ottinger devoted his life to expanding opportunity and advancing the public good. As a cofounder of the Peace Corps and a 16-year member of Congress, he helped shape national conversations on energy, environmental protection, and responsible governance. His leadership in developing landmark environmental legislation reflected a lifelong belief that principled policy can improve lives and safeguard our shared future.

At Pace, his legacy endures. He served as dean of Pace Law School from 1994 to 1999 and founded what is now the Pace Energy and Climate Center. Through his vision and dedication, the Elisabeth Haub School of Law earned national and international recognition in environmental law and climate advocacy. Generations of students, many of whom now lead in government, nonprofit organizations, and private practice, carry forward his commitment to justice and environmental stewardship.

Richard Ottinger believed deeply in the power of education to prepare leaders to confront society’s most pressing challenges. He championed a model of legal education rooted not only in scholarship but also in real-world application and public service. That approach continues to define Haub Law and reflects the very best of Pace University’s mission.

On a personal note, I am grateful for the wisdom and perspective he shared with me over the years. His counsel was thoughtful and principled and was always focused on how institutions like ours can serve with integrity and purpose. He set a powerful example of what it means to dedicate one’s life to others.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, June, his children and grandchildren, and all who were touched by his remarkable life. We also recognize the many members of our Pace community, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends, who were mentored and inspired by his example.

In the days and weeks ahead, we will share information about how the university will honor his legacy. For now, we pause to reflect with gratitude on a life of service and leadership and on the lasting mark Richard Ottinger leaves on Pace University and beyond.

Sincerely,

Marvin Krislov

President
