Sister Dorothy (Dorothy Jean Hood) was known in the Community for her faithfulness, her steady and meticulous attention to detail, and her gracious and caring attitude.
She was born in Spokane, Wash., in 1941, the daughter of Charles and Margaret Hood. Her father worked as salesman for Sears and Roebuck in Spokane.
As a young woman, Sister Dorothy entered the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in 1959, and upon becoming a novice, was given the religious name Sister Kristine Marie. She professed first vows in 1962 and perpetual vows in 1967.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education, with a minor in English, speech and drama from Viterbo College in 1967. She was missioned as a teacher to parochial schools in Wisconsin, Washington and Vancouver, B.C. She also taught at Star of the Sea School in Astoria, and several schools in Idaho.
In 1973 she received a Master of Education degree from the University of Portland. Ten years later she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Grand Valley State College in Michigan.
Sister Dorothy was a founding member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist when they were affirmed by the Sacred Congregation in 1973. At that point, she returned to the use of her baptismal name.
In 1983, she was missioned to Shaw Island, Wash., where for 21 years she managed the Community’s Little Portion Store. With the closing of the Sisters’ mission on Shaw Island in 2004, Sister Dorothy was assigned to the Frnciscan Life Education Center in Bridal Veil. She taught part-time at Mt. Hood Community College until 2020 and worked at The Grotto Gift Shop until the present.
The entire Grotto and Franciscan community mourns her death.
