Dear MCC,
Today is Halloween and tonight marks the start of the Pagan holiday of Samhain. Tomorrow is Día de los Muertos and All Saints’ Day, and Saturday is All Souls’ Day. This is the season when many traditions say that “the veil is thin.” This means that the distance between the living and the dead feels much closer than at other times of the year.
Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, also begins today. This festival honors the battle of good over evil and is celebrated by many religious traditions, including Sikhs, Hindus, Jains, and some Buddhists.
This is a sacred time of year. In our church community on Sunday, we will acknowledge this season of nearness to those who have gone before us. We invite you to bring photos and treasured mementos of loved ones to the worship service, where we will build an altar of remembrance.
Please arrive a few minutes early, to add your special items to the altar of remembrance. After service, you will be invited to retrieve them and take them back home with you.
When we bring these elements into the worship space, we honor the lives of the people we love. We recognize those who came before us and helped shape us into the people we are today.
Worship with us on Sunday, and experience the nearness of our beloveds who have gone before us to be with God.
We know that many in our community are struggling with home damage, food insecurity, and loss of income due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton. We will be taking up a special offering at church on Sunday to help provide some relief to those in our community who are struggling. You can also give to the fund here.
If you require financial assistance, applications to receive a portion of these funds will be available at church on Sundays, November 3 and 10.
You are loved,
Rev. Jakob
