AD FONTES ACADEMY
SEPTEMBER 2018 ISSUE
First Day 2018
Dear AFA Friend,

As we kick off the start of another year at Ad Fontes, we want to share with you what's NEW for 2018: new student leadership, new classes & clubs, new teachers and new volunteers!
New Perspective
With the start of a new year, it's easy for students, teachers and parents to become submerged in the details of school.

At Orientation, President Dean Luckenbaugh encouraged parents to hold onto the bigger picture of Ad Fontes' mission and vision. He also introduced a few new phrases we can use to express what AFA is all about:
  • Emboldening Faith - Christian Discipleship and Community
  • Engaging Intellect - Classical Education
  • Embracing Purpose - Well Rounded Students
These terms help us to express what AFA seeks to accomplish through its programs and community, and we look forward to exploring their meanings in future issues of the Fountain.
New Athletic Director
Cindy Stewart
Cindy Stewart graduated from George Mason University in 2004 with a B.S.Ed. in Health and Physical Education, and has spent the last 13 years teaching physical education for Prince William County Public Schools.

In addition, Mrs. Stewart has coached soccer, volleyball, basketball, and sponsored clubs for fitness, running, jump rope, and kickball. She even coached both the AFA girls volleyball and soccer teams between 2002-2004.

Coach Stewart is very excited to join Ad Fontes Academy and really enjoys working directly with the students! She is currently coaching the AFA Cross Country team and is working with the AFA volleyball teams.

This winter, Stewart will coach both the boys and girls middle school basketball teams. In the future, she hopes to continue to expand the physical activity opportunities at AFA, including the new tennis club.

Coach Stewart believes it is important to not only teach our students the importance of being healthy and active but also give them the tools they need to stay healthy and active throughout life.

We are glad to have Coach Stewart with us!
New Student Leaders
Several motivated upperclassmen and women have shown inspiring initiative this year by founding several of their own clubs and programs:
Shakespeare Play
Current Senior Abigail Smedley and Junior Emily Smith are directing Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors , including casting, set design and costumes.

Come see their performance on November 2nd at 7pm at Christ Central Presbyterian Church!
Senior Servant Leadership
AFA's Seniors, pictured here at the high school retreat, have taken proactive leadership in creating a positive school culture, including leading Morning Meetings each day.

Mr. Luckenbaugh observed, "Even as they are getting ready to leave AFA, they are deepening their investment in the community."

Leadership Club
Faith Paiz, a Senior in her sixth year at Ad Fontes, has begun the school year with a continuation of her lunchtime Christian leadership study, The Commission.

This encouraging and uplifting club leads Upper School students to dive deeper into their personal relationship with Christ and grow in being a graceful and faithful leader.

Faith and fellow Senior Anna Darling modeled this leadership at the high school retreat leading the girls in evening conversations on faith and life together, then setting up a system of notes of encouragement during the school week.
Faith and Anna
The goal of education is not simply to put information in the head. The goal of education is a transformed life.
