President's Message
Craig Birkhold, president@acdclub.org

Dear ACD Members,

Today, in issue #4 of the Boattail, I would like to give you a few updates on the happenings with the ACD Club. It is hard to believe that summer is almost half over with our national reunion in Auburn fast approaching.

My family and I recently were able to see friends at the Auburn Warm Up Meet. We had a great time touring different places in northeast Indiana. Our Friday activities included a trip to Gene Stratton -Porter’s house on Sylvan Lake. I had heard about her because of her many writings, but I did not realize that she had a home in the area. Our group had a delightful time visiting her home and property alongside the lake. You could defiantly tell there was a focus on nature as we toured the gardens and visitors center.

After the morning tour we ventured on to the Cook’s Bison Ranch for a tasty lunch and tour. Everyone enjoyed riding on the covered wagon as we got the opportunity to see bison up close and personal. I had never had the opportunity to be surrounded by the beautiful animals. After our visit to the ranch, we stopped by a maple syrup farm on our way back to Auburn.

On Saturday morning we ventured south to Fort Wayne to visit the PBS TV Studio. It was a very informative tour on the workings of a Public Broadcasting Station. I have driven by their place many times, but this was my first experience going inside. After our time at Channel 39 was over, we motored over to the west side of Fort Wayne to visit the Veteran’s National Shrine and Museum.

At the museum I was impressed with their Vietnam Memorial Wall. It is slightly smaller than the actual one on the national mall in Washington DC, but it does have the complete list of the servicemen who were lost in that war. In addition, they had a nice museum building that covered a lot of war history of out nation.
After our visit to the museum, we headed back to Auburn for a tour of the Eckhart Library in Auburn. This is another place that I had driven by many times, but never had time to stop by for a visit. I have been coming to Auburn for 30 years now for ACD activities, but the Eckhart Library has somehow mysteriously slipped past me. I was very impressed by it and would recommend a visit there sometime if the opportunity comes your way.

Following the library tour, we returned to the hotel for a nice catered dinner in the hospitality room. It was so good to see many of the normal attendees of the Auburn Warm Up meet after a two-year break.

For our national reunion in Auburn during Labor Day weekend things have been very busy from a planning perspective. Summertime has brought many trips back and forth to Auburn for planning meetings and supply deliveries. During the past month or so downtown Auburn has been experiencing a lot of road construction and repair of sidewalks around the courthouse square. Many of the construction workers are busy as bees trying to get it all put back together before Labor Day weekend. So, when you are in downtown Auburn, please look at it and I am sure you will appreciate the fresh look of downtown. Our meet registration and ACD Board of Directors ballots were mailed out in the first week in July by New Haven Printing Company. I would like to thank their staff for their dedication with performing this task. It was the first time for them to print registrations for the ACD Club and I feel they did an outstanding job. Most of you should have your ACD Reunion Registration by now and I would encourage you get busy and fill out your election ballot and have it in the mail soon. The ballots must be postmarked by July 31st to qualify for counting in our ACD Board of Directors Election.

For your registration process I strongly recommend that you sign up online at acdclub.org. There are several reasons this is a very good idea. First, your registration will be processed faster and more accurately. Your paper registration may get lost in the U.S. mail which has happened several times in the past. It will also save Brad Waken from typing your paper registration into the computer anyway (this is the most important reason to do it online). Finally, you will save yourself $5 in registration fees by doing it online. Thank you to all of you who are willing to help out and complete your registration online.

To finish up today, I wish everyone safe travels to Auburn for the Worlds Greatest Classic Car Show and Festival. The ACD Reunion team has organized another interesting and exciting Labor Day weekend for our ACD Club Members. We are looking forward to seeing you soon in the beautiful city of Auburn Indiana.
                                                                                    Best wishes,

Allan McCrary, ACD Chief Judge

This is certainly not the “Complete Guide to Your Reunion,” that will be revealed elsewhere in our publications, as well in your packet when you arrive in Auburn. However, here are a few things to start considering so that you may be better prepared when you arrive. Or, better yet, convince you to attend if you are still undecided.

First, Registration is what you need to be focusing on at the present and yes, it has been mentioned a time or two, but the online method is not only preferred by us but it is incredibly quick and easy.

Things take off on the fast track beginning Friday.

There is the Swap meet, Certification (contact Jim O Brien if you haven’t already for an appointment if you are in search of certifying your ACD ride) and Driver’s Tour to a local winery, all leading up to the afternoon activities… the Club Seminar and Tech Session.

The Seminar is primarily all about restorations, procedures for Saturday morning for owners and members, as well and to answer any questions about the new judging procedures. Mark Tomei, Chief of Judging Standards, will be present for any and all questions.

Those volunteering to judge can check-in with their appropriate coordinator for Saturday’s assignment:
AUBURN-Jay Engler
CORD L-29-Lindsey Barrett
CORD 810-812-Paul Loebel
DUESENBERG-Bill Driest

Next, is yet another example of what a bargain your $55 membership consists of! Following the Tech Session in the South parking lot area of the ACDA Museum, an example of each of our four primary models will be on display with a designated expert on each present to answer authenticity questions. Priceless!

Saturday is huge, of course. Once again, we will be modifying the layout in Eckhardt Park from past years, due to construction considerations. I say ‘past years’ but actually, the layout mirrors that of my first Reunion in 1974! Map and explicit directions will be in your registration packet upon check in. Follow them! The most significant difference, perhaps, is that the Auburn display will be on the football field on the North end of the Park, just as you enter. If we can get a substantial number of those not driving to assist in directing those who are to their proper spot, it would really help matters. We can NEVER have enough volunteers for the job. In fact, we never HAVE had enough to make it run as smoothly as I would like, so please step forward! Touch base with me in the Park early Saturday morning and I’ll be more than happy to get you started.

Judges should check in at the Judge’s Table between 8:00am-9:00am. Once checked in, find your coordinator and enjoy the experience of examining some world class cars up-close, while you continue to learn to increase your knowledge of them.

And now, my second pitch for volunteers to judge. It’s been spelled out in previous columns but you DO NOT have to be an expert on any particular ACD car to judge at the Reunion. With the new judging standards, we are primarily looking for authenticity. Plus, the new forms make it so much easier to delineate those points. Based on your experience level and personal desires, you will be matched up on a team with those who would help guide you in making those decisions and you have the best of the best schooling! I have tried in the past to issue personal invitations to those who have judged before, or who have expressed an interest in doing so. This can be quite cumbersome and I’ve not always been able to make contact. So please, do not feel that you need something in writing. Just see me or one of the coordinators in Auburn, any time before Saturday morning.

Check your tri-fold card for the entire Labor Day weekend schedule and, as a final reminder (this time around, anyway) please consider volunteering as a parking marshal and/or a Judge.

That’s how all this magic gets accomplished...

1936 Cord 810/812: The Beautiful Baby Duesenberg That Never Caught On
By Robert Pease
This video came out right after Jay’s interview of our Cord Complete book introduction, on Jay Leno ‘s Garage, in 2010.

Josh (Malk's) and I were directed to Jay’s garage for the video, but at the last minute, because a huge rain storm blanketed Burbank, with flooded streets etc., the site was changed to Auto/Areo Books store in Burbank.

Jay was quite up on the Cord and just loved the book, he also admitted to wanting one. We helped, and he did this 812 homage to the restorer.

I came across it again on YouTube and thought my friends would like to see it! It’s one of the most detailed reviews ever on the 810-812 Westchester models and every Cord lover should see it.

After this trip to Jay’s, we used the location of SoCal as our launch of the book, and the grand opening at The Petersen Museum (reception and chat), then on to El Segundo Auto Museum and finally, the San Diego Auto Museum, in Balboa Park. It was a whirlwind tour launching the Cord Complete!
