Beach fires may seem harmless, but they pose serious risks to public safety and the environment. Because of these dangers, beach bonfires and fires are prohibited on all Boca Raton public beaches. Discover these fires harm our coastline and community - and remember to NEVER start one.

Beach Fires Prohibited

Remember, beach bonfires are not permitted on any Boca Raton public beach.

Violations of this regulation are subject to enforcement under Ordinance 11-6, which may result in:

  • Fine of up to $500,
  • Imprisonment up to 60 days,
  • OR BOTH

Don't take that chance!

The Dangers of Fires on the Beach

Even when extinguished, beach fire pits can remain hazardous. Buried embers and sand-covered debris can smolder for up to 24 hours, creating hidden dangers for beachgoers, lifeguards, and wildlife.

Common leftover materials include:

  • Hot coals beneath the sand
  • Nails and debris from burned pallets
  • Partially burned wood and trash

These materials pose real dangers.

They can cause serious injuries to people walking over the area, sea turtles crawling across the sand, or lifeguards trying to get to someone in need - long after a fire appears to be out.

Sea Turtles & Wildlife Safety

Between March and October, Boca Raton beaches are active nesting grounds for sea turtles, and a habitat for other wildlife year-round.

Beach fires and fire pits can:

  • Disorient nesting sea turtles and hatchlings
  • Obstruct nesting pathways to the ocean
  • Introduce heat and light disturbances that impact survival

Nest markers and stakes should never be used as firewood, as they are critical for protecting sea turtle populations. Tampering with nests or markers is illegal under Florida law and may result in fines and penalties.

Environmental Risks

Beach bonfires can leave lasting negative impacts on Boca Raton’s coastal environment.

Burning or improperly disposing of materials used for the fire can:

  • Release toxic chemicals into the sand and water
  • Damage sensitive coastal vegetation that supports wildlife habitats
  • Harm marine life
