Abstract: Through a series of interviews with principal investigators who were managing a high volume (3-6 per lab) of undergraduate researchers, we identified a number of skill deficiencies that could be addressed in the classroom. From experimental design to appropriate controls, undergraduates needed more guided experience to increase independence in the laboratory. I have developed a series of stepped up writing assignments in conjunction with simple workshops with handouts in order to fill this education gap. Further, my curriculum is designed to manage the grading burden of an intense writing course, while still demanding a high level of both scientific thinking and writing. CURE survey results indicate students’ scientific writing; ability to read the scientific literature and ability to analyze data is enhanced by this curriculum.
