Consultation on the Education System

The Provincial Government is doing a consultation on the education system . There are seven questions and three options for comments:

open submission for both individuals and groups
a survey for individuals
a telephone town hall

Deadline for comments is December 15, 2018.

Consultation on Climate Change

This consultation asks for ideas on their list of topics as found on their consultation page . The submission form does not ask for names or addresses, so it can be done by either individuals or by groups, including a Club Issues group.

Deadline for comments is November 16, 2018.

A few facts about Gendered Violence in Ontario

Did you know…

In the CFUW Advocacy Survey done during the Spring 2018, violence against women and girls, women’s shelters and human trafficking were the top three local issues across Ontario.
Between Jan.1 and August 30,2018, 53 Ontario women had been killed.
8 of those women were killed during the van attack of April 23^rd. Two men were also killed during that attack.

Here in Ontario, November is the month we focus on Gender-Based Violence. Nationally, we join the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence , (November 25 to December 10).

At the 2018 Ontario Council AGM this past May, the membership adopted the resolution, Housing For All in Ontario . These items are available for Clubs wishing to advocate on this adopted resolution:

Better Ballot Campaign

The Provincial and Municipal elections are behind us, but the Federal election is only a year away. CFUW Guelph and community partners created a non-partisan, community initiative that is asking candidates and voters to make a commitment to stick to the issues and reject all personal attacks during the elections. They will be reviewing the success, making some changes and reviving this for the federal election.

Considering the misogynistic and hateful comments made to female candidates during the municipal elections, especially those running in mayoralty races, this is an important campaign to follow and support.

Ontario Council Speakers Series

November 24, 2018

Morning Plenary: G uest speaker Rosemary Ganley, Peterborough ON, lifelong feminist activist, writer and educator will be speaking on her “Participation with the Gender Equality Advisory Council for Canada’s G7 Presidency”.

Afternoon Workshops: The Education and Status of Women and Human Rights workshops features Kathleen Clark speaking on Restorative Justice. The Legislation workshop features Dionne Pohler and Kourtney Koebel speaking on the next steps following the recent cancellation of Ontario’s Basic Income Pilot .
