Vista Streets Are for Everyone:
E-Bike Enforcement
This video takes you inside a real-time e-bike and e-motorcycle enforcement operation in downtown Vista, led by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. Sergeant Eric Cottrell and his motor deputies are out in the field focusing on both enforcement and education. As the popularity of e-bikes continues to grow, so do misconceptions about what is legal, what is safe, and what qualifies as a bicycle versus a motorcycle under California law.
During the operation, deputies address common violations including riding against traffic, ignoring stop signs and red lights, operating on sidewalks, and using high-powered electric motorcycles without proper licensing, registration, or insurance. The video also captures a real stop involving a juvenile rider whose illegal electric motorcycle was ultimately towed.
Safety is our priority, and the City of Vista offers FREE e-bike classes/training sessions throughout the year. Upcoming classroom-style and practical training sessions include May 16, June 6, and August 8, in the Civic Center Community Room (200 Civic Center Dr.). Additionally, City of Vista residents who attend our one-hour classroom-style and/or practical training sessions are eligible for rebates on approved e-bike purchases.
The video can also be accessed on our YouTube channel here.
