Join FWC biologist, Jennifer Callaghan, to learn about the crucial role horseshoe crabs play in coastal and marine ecosystems and how we are all linked to horseshoe crabs.

Story Time & Craft

Friday, May 1 at 10:00 a.m.

Join Pinellas County Mosquito Control for a reading, a guided mosquito craft activity, and interact with an “Insect Zoo Lab”! Recommended for Pre-K through Kindergarten. 

Naturalist Guided Tour

Saturdays, May 2 & 9 at 9:30 a.m.

Experience Weedon Island on a naturalist-led tour, where participants can discover native flora and fauna and the island’s rich cultural history. For ages 10+.

Turtle Talk

Saturday, May 2 at 10:30 a.m.

Join experts from the National Wildlife Federation for a talk on sea turtles that call Florida’s coast home. Find out how you can be a part of the solution to keep our beaches safe this nesting season.

Volunteer Archaeology Lab

Friday, May 8 at 1 p.m.

Join professional archaeologists for a hands-on lab where volunteers can help clean, sort, and identify real artifacts uncovered at Weedon Island. For ages 12+

Tiny Wildlife Experience

Saturday, May 16 at 9:30 a.m.

Wildlife abounds at the Preserve especially the tiny kind, like butterflies, bees, crabs and other invertebrates. Join us to learn how to see Weedon’s little creatures. For ages 10+

Herpetology Summer Camp

June 15 - 18, 2026 (four-day camp)

Time: 9 am - 4 pm each day

  • $160 per camper
  • Ages 7-11

Fort De Soto Park Bio-Blitz

Saturday, May 2nd from 9 - 11am

Location: Fort De Soto Park, Shelter 11 


Buzz in to Fort De Soto for a spectacular adventure to help our pollinators. “Bee” a part of a community science team to discover the flowers and insects in our parks.

Volunteer With Us



Do you have an interest in nature and history? And do you enjoy sharing that knowledge with others? Then you should join our volunteer team!



The Center has opportunities for volunteer docents who welcome visitors and provide information on the recreational and educational opportunities available at Weedon Island. There are also openings for seasonal guides who provide interpretive trail tours. Training is provided, but volunteers must be 18+.

Friends of Weedon Island is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the educational, conservation, and preservation efforts at Weedon Island Preserve in St. Petersburg, FL. Since their founding in 1992, they have provided essential financial and volunteer support for a variety of programs and projects aimed at safeguarding the Preserve’s unique habitat, ecology, and cultural history.

The mission of the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural & Natural History Center is to empower citizens to make informed decisions about natural and cultural resources. Center programs interpret the natural, cultural and archaeological history of the Preserve to demonstrate how the environment and people support and shape each other.
