The U.S. Senate offices of Training & Development and Employee Assistance & Well-being hosted the Wellness Fair on July 20th and 21st at the Senate Hart Building. This was the first time the fair had been held since 2019, centered around the theme "Working Back to Wellness." Over 30 vendors were present, offering live demonstrations, health resources, and information to help attendees find ways to enhance their health and well-being.
The fair was set up in a spacious venue, with booths representing the 8 Pillars of Well-Being: physical, environmental, purpose, professional, social, emotional, financial, and intellectual. Healthcare providers, fitness experts, nutritionists, mental health professionals, and other wellness-related vendors ran several booths. They offered valuable information, demonstrations, and engaging activities to help attendees take proactive steps toward better health. Free health screenings, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and BMI checks, were also available to identify potential health risks.
The fair provided a platform for attendees to connect with like-minded individuals, build a community, and share personal experiences and success stories about their health journey. With 1,581 participants over the two days and 20 people who attended the live stream, the Wellness Fair was a positive and enriching experience. It inspired participants to take charge of their health and well-being, fostering a community and helping individuals access valuable resources to make meaningful lifestyle changes for a healthier and happier life.

August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month
Breastfeeding is good for both infants and mothers. Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for most infants. As an infant grows, breast milk changes to meet the infant’s nutritional needs. Breastfeeding can also help protect the infant and mother against certain illnesses and diseases. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for at least 12 months and for as long as both the mother and baby would like.
DC Health is committed to helping families have positive and successful breastfeeding experiences. Read more for the many reasons why breastfeeding is best for you and your baby as well as the resources available to parents and workplaces regarding breastfeeding.

ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST DOCUMENTED AFRICANS IN ENGLISH AMERICAN
FORT WASHINGTON, MD …The Prince George’s County Maryland Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc. presents an award-winning documentary, titled the “Arrival of the First Documented Africans in English America,” on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m., at the Accokeek Library, 15773 Livington Road, Accokeek, MD 20607.
Award winning author Ric Murphy tells the extraordinary story of the arrival in 1619, of a group of thirty-two African men, women and children who arrived on the shores of Virginia. They had been kidnapped in the royal city of Kabasa, Angola, and forced aboard the Spanish slave ship the San Juan Bautista. The ship was attacked by privateers, and the captives were taken by the English to their New World colony. This group has been shrouded in controversy ever since.
Historian Ric Murphy has documented a fascinating story of colonialism, treason, piracy, kidnapping, enslavement, and English Common Law. The Arrival of the First Africans in English America is a must-see documentary.

Message From The SPIRIT Newsletter
Bernadette Bailey, Editor
The SPIRIT newsletter is anticipating a banner year as it looks forward to introducing readers to more information that fulfills POWAB’s mission “to connect people and communities to resources to achieve and support whole person health in mind, body and spirit.” In fact, The Spirit intends to be a vital resource toward that goal. Looking back over 2022, we can highlight in-person interviews with leading local clergy, special guest appearances and holistic videos, one of which targeted senior citizens. Several of our articles pointed out healthcare disparities and their adverse effects on minority communities.
We will continue our multi-ethnic/cultural stances as part of our dedication to inclusiveness. As a community service, when the pandemic continued to rage, we provided the locations of clinics dispensing Covid vaccinations.
Our 2023 goal is to increase our readership and expand our reach. The most recent data show that we have 413 subscribers; 90% accessed the newsletter by desktop and 10% by mobile device. However, receiving the newsletter and actually reading it are two different things. So, we have a task ahead of us.
The editorial staff is counting on the POWAB family to spread the good news of the bounty of information awaiting them in this valuable resource. Let’s make POWAB known throughout the DMV.
Bernadette Bailey Editor, The SPIRIT
