HPED Welcomes Summer Intern Margaret Chen
|
This week, we welcome Margaret Chen as the new Whitehead Intern for HPED for this summer! She is a rising junior at Haverford College, majoring in Environmental Studies and minoring in Growth and Structure in Cities at Bryn Mawr.
For 10 weeks, she will be helping HPED with event coordination, HPED newsletters, our website and facebook pages, business district plantings and business recruitment for rain gardens and stormwater planters.
"I am excited to meet and get to know the people in the Haverford Township community, and for this opportunity to work with HPED," explains Margaret.
Along with helping HPED, she hopes to learn more about Haverford Township businesses and methods for revitalizing business districts!

Free Storm Water Planters or Rain Gardens for Businesses
|
|
|
Haverford businesses can request a free storm water flow through planter if they have downspouts in a visible, paved location on their business property or rain gardens if they have a suitable location. A limited number of planters will be available to good locations under a pilot program organized by the Environmental Advisory Committee and funded by the Haverford Township Civic Council.
Storm water management is essential to maintain the health of our streams. A variety of storm water strategies, such as rain gardens or storm water planters protect stream banks from erosion due to the high volume of water during rain storms.
Storm Water Planters are custom-built wooden boxes that are connected to one of your downspouts. They slow the release of rain water into our storm drains, as well as providing beauty and greenery!
Rain Gardens are beautiful landscaped areas built down, instead of up, intercepting runoff from buildings, driveways and other impervious surfaces before it can reach the storm sewers and streams. Small gardens are typically 6-12 inches deep and drain within a day or two after a rain. Plants are water and drought tolerant and need little or no watering after they are established. Storm water planters are designed to filter and detain water from downspouts watering a beautiful array of water and drought tolerant plants.
Our summer intern, Margaret Chen, will be working on identifying businesses who have ideal locations for stormwater planters. If you want to learn more about the planters or see whether you would be a good fit, contact Margaret at

HPED is a partnership between residents, township officials, and businesses, and has been working on behalf of our businesses since its inception in 2010. From business district beautification projects to business networking events, from public information sessions on new development to developing business recruitment materials, from marketing our Township as a shopping and dining destination to events to promote economic growth, our goals have been the same - to foster the development, breadth and growth of our business districts while maintaining and enhancing the inherent charm of our community.
