York Regional Police: 100% of Traced Guns Smuggled in from United States
York Regional Police kicked the legs out from under Justin Trudeau’s “handgun freeze” when they presented their report – Guns, Gangs and Violence – to the Police Services Board on November 7th.[i]
“Out of 107 firearms that you see, 83 of them were successfully traced. Of those 83 guns that were traced, 100 per cent of them were identified as illicit firearms coming in from the United States and into Canada,” said Inspector Ahmad Salhia.[ii]
One hundred percent of the handguns traced were smuggled into Canada illegally from the United States.
This proves, as we already knew, that Bill C-21 and Trudeau’s much-touted “handgun freeze” are nothing more than virtue signals so he can pander to uninformed urban voters.
“More regulations on law-abiding citizens is profoundly stupid,” said Leo Knight, a former police officer. “It is done by incompetent governments faced with a problem who want to be seen to be doing something but aren’t smart enough to actually figure out what to do.”
Mr. Knight almost nailed it. This Liberal government is thoroughly incompetent and their approach, adding more restrictions on law-abiding citizens, is profoundly stupid.
But it’s also intentional.
The issue is not lack of intelligence or an inability to comprehend facts, but of placing partisan political objectives ahead of public safety.
Pandering for votes is what drives Justin Trudeau and every policy initiative he puts forth. Public safety, if it’s even a consideration beyond his political calculations, comes a distant second.
“Tackling criminal activity requires strong measures against criminals who threaten vulnerable communities, especially criminal activity that funds and empowers gangs and organized crime,” said Brian Sauvé, President of the National Police Federation.
If Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government truly wanted to enhance public safety, he would focus on keeping young people from entering gang life through diversion programs and plugging massive holes in Canada’s border security.
Instead, he continues his attacks on licensed firearm owners.
The York Regional Police report also identified the possible point of entry for those illegal weapons: Walpole Island, a First Nation community on the St. Clair River, right across from Port Huron, Michigan. [iii]
“At its narrowest point there's an 800-metre gap and as you can see, it's very easy for organized crime and other criminals to import illicit contraband into the country,” Insp. Salhia said.
This is just one of many well-known issues with border security.
“According to the union’s own data, as of 2019, only one one-millionth of all rail cargo was effectively being examined. The reality is that our current operational abilities in the rail field are virtually non-existent,” said Mark Weber, National President, Customs and Immigration Union.
Justin Trudeau, Bill Blair and Marco Mendicino know precisely where the problems are, but they know there are no votes to be found in doing the right thing.
Votes are found by pandering to the most uninformed voters who want to see their government “do something” – even if it’s the wrong thing.

No benefit to ban
In his letter to the editor Gun ban has role (Nov. 3), David Nielsen says the purpose of a gun ban is “to make homicide harder and less convenient” and also “to make a statement of social policy.”
How has this gun ban made our streets any safer? Criminals do not buy their guns through legal channels. In articles involving street crime, The Free Press repeatedly has pointed out crimes involving handguns are committed by suspects prohibited from owning firearms.
One cannot, in Canada, simply go to a store and buy a gun without a valid possession acquisition licence. In order to obtain a license for acquisition, you must first take a course in the safe use of firearms.
There are different requirements for unrestricted weapons, like shotguns, and restricted weapons like handguns. Provided a person is successful in obtaining a licence for a restricted weapon and goes to a licensed gun store to purchase a handgun, you cannot leave the store with it. The purchase has to be processed and sent to the chief firearms officer through the RCMP, a process that usually takes a few weeks. Even then, you cannot take a handgun anywhere without an authorization to transport.
We must differentiate between Canadian firearms regulations and those in the U.S. They are vastly different.
I recommend Mr. Nielson visit a gun range during one of their open houses to speak to firearms owners. Many firearms owners are either active police officers or members of the Canadian Forces, or veterans or retirees from both. They are responsible, law-abiding citizens. If the government is serious about gun crime, the way to address it is to go after the criminals with stiffer sentences for those committing gun crimes. Going after licensed, law-abiding gun owners will not do a thing to solve gun crime.

Family Coverage (+$40/year)
Extend your coverage to your spouse and all dependent children living at home under the age of 25 (all participating family members must have their PAL). This is not a per-person amount! $40 covers everyone.

Personal Injury
If you're injured by someone else using a firearm or bow, we'll provide you access to a lawyer and cover legal costs.
Extension to Bows
Your coverage now extends to bows, including crossbows, recurve, compound and longbows.
You are not required to disclose any information about firearms in your possession.
Firearm Legal Defence insurance covers:
- Defence from prosecution should you be charged with an offence arising out of the use, storage, display, transportation or handling of a firearm;
- Cases where a firearm is used in self-defence, the defence of a person under your protection or the defence of your property;
- Appealing an event where a licensing, regulatory or judicial authority refuses to renew, suspends, revokes, cancels or alters the terms of your firearms licence. Note that this provision does not apply to new licence applications.
Firearm Legal Defence pays for:
- The cost of retaining a lawyer or other appointed representative, including court fees, experts; fees, police reports and medical reports;
- Costs awarded by the court to opponents in civil cases if the insured person has been ordered to pay them, or pays them with the agreement of the insurance company;
- Lost salary or wages for the time the insured is off work to attend court or any other hearing at the request of the appointed representative, up to a maximum of $500 per day and $10,000 in total.
