Gluten Risks from Packaging?
Plant-based food contact materials are being researched as potential solutions as many countries are beginning to discourage the use of plastics. The Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) hosted a recent webinar discussing the potential risk from wheat-based food contact materials, such as packaging and biodegradable films, to persons with celiac disease. The safety of these materials for gluten-free consumers will need to be reviewed before they become commonplace in consumer packaged goods. The webinar may be viewed here.
