Fighting Fentanyl

MANDATORY OPIOID ANTAGONIST REPORTING:

In accordance with 25 Texas Administrative Code, Section 40.87, campus must report when a school personnel member or school volunteer administers an opioid antagonist. Use the DSHS unassigned opioid antagonist medication reporting form to report when opioid antagonist medication is administered.

Seizure Management

Updates to The Texas Education Code (TEC) §38.032(a)(1): Section 3 of Senate Bill (SB) 1506, 88th Texas Legislature, Regular Session, 2023, states that the change in law only applies to a seizure management and treatment plan submitted to a school district on or after January 1, 2024.


Seizure plans submitted prior to January 1, 2024, can be on any form; however, beginning on or after January 1, 2024, information submitted must be on the form posted on the Healthy and Safe School Environment of the Coordinated School Health Model webpage.  

The new form is NOT optional, and parents will have to submit the new form for any new diagnosis or when the school year begins again.

The Bridge Access Program provides free COVID-19 vaccines to adults without health insurance and adults whose insurance does not cover all COVID-19 vaccine costs. This program will end by December 31, 2024.

Drug Impairment Training for Educational Professionals (DITEP)

DITEP provides school administrators, teachers, and nurses with a systematic approach to recognizing and evaluating individuals in the academic environment who are using or are impaired by drugs, in order to provide early intervention. 


This two-day training provided 50 participants with information and hands-on training in how to administer the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Vertical Gaze Nystagmus, and Lack of Convergence tests, eye examinations, Divided Attention Testing such as the Modified Romberg Balance, Walk and Turn, One Leg Stand, and Finger to Nose tests, and using a person’s vital signs to provide information about the presence or absence of various categories of drugs.

The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is partnering with Sandy Hook Promise to launch the virtual Start with Hello training program, which teaches students to be more socially inclusive and connected to each other. Training is 2.5 hours and will consist of a wide range of activities and resources to ensure training integration within the school culture. The next training on January 23, 2024, from 9:30 am-12:00 pm.
