Fighting Voter Suppression in Wisconsin

Voter ID: How the ACLU is fighting voter suppression in Wisconsin Wisconsin's new Voter ID law will keep otherwise eligible citizens from voting in the 2012 elections. Since the law was signed by Governor Walker on May 25, 2011, the ACLU of Wisconsin has heard from citizens across the state who will not be able to vote this year because they do not have the documents required to obtain one of a limited number of photo IDs now required to cast a ballot.
On December 13, 2011 the ACLU of Wisconsin filed a federal lawsuit because allowing only certain types of photo ID imposes a severe burden on the right to vote in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. It also states that the law violates the 24th and 14th amendments because it effectively imposes an unconstitutional poll tax.
