Jujubes
| |
In this Alert we introduce you to a rare and unusual fruiting tree for us North Americans: jujubes. Though few of us have heard of these interesting fruits, they are widely eaten from southeastern Europe through the Middle East, Central Asia, and all the way to China. They are also hardy to zone 5 and are great in small spaces. Get know jujubes in our article below.
They are part of our Citrus and Rare Fruit Pre-Order. While most of this pre-order has arrived, the jujubes will arrive in the third week of October.
You'll also find info on our Spring Bulb and Bare Root Pre-Order. Many bulbs are already in stock with our rare ones about to arrive.
We are also now harvesting and shipping our cactus pads from our Cactus Pad Pre-Order. Get your orders in and we can ship right away. We only harvest to order so locals will also have to place an order online.
Our Great Rose Pre-Order is also running for spring 2024 with more than 100 cultivars and more to come with launches throughout the fall and winter.
There's a lot to shop for from the comfort of your own home as well as at the nursery! Have fun and see you soon!
Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

Wednesday October 11th, 2023
Richmond Public Library, Brighouse
100-7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond
Bulbs are a diverse, fascinating and easy-to-grow group of plants. Planting them in the fall for spring blooms can take your garden and containers to the next level offering beauty and colour when perennials and shrubs are still dormant. Bulbs can also be tucked into small spaces, planted under ground covers, added to mixed containers, and planted between existing plants to add extra layers of interest. Gary will introduce you to a wide range of spring-flowering bulbs and how to grow them.
The talk is free but advance registration is required to reserve your space.

Jujubes
A tasty, crunchy fruit you've likely never heard of before
Ziziphus jujuba is a rare and unique fruiting tree known as jujube, red date, or Chinese date. They typically grow into beautiful small trees perfect for small spaces or even large pots reaching about 8-10 feet tall. They have an attractive zig zag branching pattern that is particularly beautiful in winter when the leaves have fallen revealing the architecture of the tree. Their bark is also greyish to silvery and quite beautiful
The small greenish fragrant flowers appear in spring and produce oval fruit that look like dates. They are about an inch long with chestnut brown to reddish burgundy skin and are harvested in autumn. The fruit has a whitish to greenish flesh and can be eaten when crisp like an apple or when dried. The flavour is most similar to that of a delicate apple. They can be very sweet or can be a refreshing blend of sweet and subtly tart. When dried they taste like a date.
Jujubes were first domesticated in Southwest Asia in 9000 BC and are today used in diverse culinary traditions across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. They can be eaten fresh or dried. They can made into fresh drinks, teas, alcohols such as brandy or beer, or vinegars. They can be included in desserts or they can be candied or pickled or made into syrups, jams and jellies.
The flowers are partially self-fertile so you will get fruit with just one plant. However, two different cultivars will give you maximum production.
Jujubes enjoy full to part sun and are tolerant of average to somewhat dry conditions. They are tough trees and are hardy to zone 5 allowing the majority of Canadian gardeners to grow them outdoors!
Are you ready to grow a new fruit you've likely never heard of before?
Here are the cultivars we have available:

While most of the plants in this pre-order have arrived, the jujubes along with paw paws, loquats, pineapple guavas and a few other plants will be arriving around the third week of October. We'll get them ready for pick-up or shipping right away. | |
