100% Wool Sawtooth Edge Stroud Cloth

Our Wool Stroud Cloth is hand-dyed from 100% wool and has the characteristic saw tooth edges. This saw tooth pattern is achieved by “saving” the edges so that the dye cannot penetrate the wool. Highly desirable for early style blankets and garments, his cloth is approximatly 55"-56" wide. As this fabric is hand-dyed, there may be some small areas of inconsistent color. Note: This cloth is dyed in 10 meter sections; if you order more than this amount, it will be in two pieces.

Heavy Canvas 18th Century Haversacks

Commonly used by both civilians and soldiers through most of the 18th and early 19th century, our canvas haversacks can be used with either colonial or early fur trade reenactments. Made from sturdy canvas and offered in a few sizes and styles. All styles have a nice muslin inner lining that is held in by corner buttons, allowing the liner to be easily removed if desired. Our “tarred” haversack is not done by the conventional process. This tarring has three layers: a waterproof binder, pigment layer, and a lacquer. These layers are hydraulically pressed into canvas to give it the same look and function as old time tarred haversacks.

Brief History of Steel Fire Strikers and Fire Making

If you have ever got up on a cold, dark morning and flipped a switch or struck a match, you will be glad you are living after the mid-19th century (unless you are at a Rendezvous). Until a short time ago (in terms of eons of history) anyone during a cold winter who did not keep their fire burning all night had to start the day by striking flint on steel to make a spark.

The two most common methods of fire-making before the advent of matches in the mid-1800s were friction and percussion. Of these methods, percussion (flint and steel) was preferred as it was faster. Anyone can quickly and easily master the skill of fire making with the right tools (including char cloth or other tinder). The most important part is getting a spark to fall on a piece of tinder. As natural flint and steel were commonly used, the firesteel or striker was often kept in a metal tinderbox together with the flint and tinder.
