Autism Science Month - Week 1: Sensory Issues

Sensory processing issues are a common challenge for autistic people. This can include heightened sensitivity to certain stimuli, such as sounds or textures, as well as difficulty processing and integrating sensory information from different sources. For many, sensory processing issues can significantly impact daily life and make it difficult to navigate the world around them. Fortunately, there are emerging resources available to help individuals with sensory processing issues and their families understand and manage these challenges.

Dr. Edelson's Editorial:

Auditory Processing Problems in Autism

Autism is sometimes described as a social/communication problem. Processing auditory information is a critical component of social communication, and people with autism typically have problems processing this information. One problem occurs when a person hears speech sounds but does not perceive the meaning of the sounds. Sometimes the lack of speech comprehension is interpreted by others as an unwillingness to comply when in fact, the person simply isn’t able to retrieve the meaning at that moment.

#WebinarWednesdays - Research Making a Difference

Brain & Sensory Processing Differences Across the Lifespan

In part one of this webinar series, Fakhri Shafai, Ph.D., M.Ed., discusses sensory differences experienced by individuals with autism across the lifespan. She describes atypical neuronal migration and synaptic pruning and outlines how such differences in brain development lead to sensory issues in autism.

Free webinar 4/12: Autism and Pica

Tune in to hear Dean Alexander, Ph.D., discuss pica, the ingestion of non-food substances, which has received insufficient attention as a common, sometimes lethal, form of self-injurious behavior. Behavioral approaches to treatment, more often than not, fall short. Biological intervention, if supported, may hold out new promise.

ARI's Impact Report is online now

Your Gift Matters:

April is Autism Science Month.

If you plan to give, thank you for keeping ARI on your list.

Earlier this year, we took time to pause and examine the impact ARI is working to provide the autism community. This gave us a chance to take stock of last year's initiatives and share our progress. Our latest impact report illustrates what we are doing to bring our mission to life.
