ME'scope Vibration Analysis training: "Four Case Studies using ME'scope". Vibration Analyst and ME'scope expert Dan Ambre will conduct four online ME'scope training sessions using four case studies from his 20+ years in advanced Vibration diagnostics. Using real world examples, Dan will teach you how he resolved complex noise and vibration problems utilizing the suite of ME'scope tools. All sessions are recorded and each registrant will receive a link to the recordings following the course.

Case Study #1: Nuclear Feed Water Pump Resonance
This case was over ten years in the making and features essentially all of capabilities of the ME’scope software. We started in 2005 with an Experimental Modal Analysis. Using the Structural Dynamics Modification (SDM) option, a pump operating speed resonance condition was resolved.

Case Study #2: Pulp Mill Boiler Recovery Fan Resonance
This case involves a heavily used fan that is only taken out of service every two years. Elevated vibration levels in the turbine drive pointed toward coupling misalignment and resonance amplification. Full Spectrum Diagnostics was requested to perform an Experimental Modal Analysis during the scheduled turbine overhaul. ME’scope EMA analysis was used to define the turbine system natural frequencies, damping and mode shapes to resolve troublesome resonance problems.

Case Study #3: Rocket Engine Nozzle Analysis
This case was an evaluation of a new “upper stage” rocket engine nozzle design. The analysis was requested to define the natural frequencies in the structure that may be excited during the “boost” phase of flight. The ME’scope Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) was performed on the shell structure, revealing “Nodal Diameter” type mode shapes unique to “ring” and “shell” structures. Curve-Fitting techniques are used to clean-up noisy test data and enhance the frequency, damping and mode shape characteristics of the structure. The nozzle profile was found to create some interesting mode shapes.

Case Study #4: Belt Driven Fan Resonance
This case involved a new OEM belt driven fan design. The underlying vibration fault was inducing resonance problems in the motor mount design and the fabricated fan base structure. The ME’scope Operating Deflection Shape (ODS) analysis and Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) options were used to sort out the “Root Cause” and its related “Effects”. The machinery animations were essential in understanding the problem, whereby costly modifications could be avoided.
