Story by Jesten Richardson/HD Media

Marshall University students were treated to tours of the new Brad D. Smith Center for Business and Innovation on Sunday, ahead of the start of the spring semester.

“I feel like they made it so welcoming for us to come in as students, ‘cause they know we’re nervous about this place, so for them be excited with us about it, I feel like everyone is real stoked to get the year started,” said Jasmine Rutherford, a sophomore from Huntington who is studying health care administration.

Rutherford described the Brad D. Smith Center for Business and Innovation was “very neat, very futuristic.”

Marshall great Randy Moss named to College Football Hall of Fame

Marshall University great Randy Moss has been named as a Class of 2024 inductee to the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame, it was announced on Jan. 7.

Moss, who starred at Marshall for two seasons, was told of his nomination to the College Football Hall of Fame while on set for ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown."

Moss' inclusion in the Class of 2024 came after Marshall's nomination to the National Football Foundation last year.

"How great it is to finally see Randy being officially honored into the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame," said Christian Spears, Marshall's Director of Athletics. "There are probably just a special few who have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame prior to the College Football Hall of Fame, but Randy is so deserving having impacted the game at both levels dramatically. Marshall is honored to have submitted this nomination and we are thrilled for him and his family on this hard-earned recognition."

75 Family Alumni Chapter

launches fundraiser

On Nov. 14, 1970, a Southern Airways DC-9 crashed near the Huntington Tri-State Airport, claiming the lives of all 75 individuals on board, including 37 members of the Marshall University football team, eight coaching staff, 25 boosters, community members, and five Southern Airways employees. Seventy children lost at least one parent, and 18 were orphaned after losing both parents. This incident stands as the worst sports-related air tragedy in history.

Marshall University and the Marshall 75 Family Alumni Chapter have established a 75 Legacy Scholarship Fund for the descendants of the crash victims who wish to pursue a higher education degree at Marshall University.

“This scholarship fund will allow descendants to attend Marshall at no cost to themselves,” said Leslie Deese Garvis, president of the Marshall 75 Family Alumni Chapter. “What better way to ensure the legacy of the 75 endures through their descendants than to provide a way for them to attend the University they loved.”

Marshall University professors Daniel Brazeau, Ph.D., and Gayle Brazeau, Ph.D., participated in an American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) delegation to Havana, Cuba, this month as part of a pharmacy education exchange program.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to learn about health care, drug formulation and development including natural products, and pharmacy practices and education abroad while networking with colleagues from across the country,” said Gayle Brazeau, professor for the School of Pharmacy and editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education.

“We were able to have very productive discussions forming foundations for future research collaborations,” added Daniel Brazeau, associate professor of research for the schools of pharmacy and medicine.

#HerdHistory

Basketball season is upon us, so we're throwing it back to 1968 when Coach Dan D'Antoni played point guard on Marshall's men's basketball team. D'Antoni went on to be an assistant coach with NBA teams such as the Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers before returning to Huntington nearly 10 years ago to be the head men's basketball coach here at Marshall.
