Featuring
Pablo Iscold
Prof. of Airplane Design
CalPoly
Wednesday, May 4th, 2022
No Host Bar: 5:30 p.m., Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.
Pablo Iscold is a CalPoly professor of airplane design. Pablo is not just any professor but a rather acclaimed one that designed aircraft that currently hold 9 world records (speed and time to climb), 5 US soaring records. He will be showing details of his work as Red Bull Air Race engineer and his contribution to the Steve Hinton world record with "Voodoo."
Air racing Champion, Steve Hinton Jr., set the record for speed in a highly modified P-51 Mustang "Voodol" at a speed of 531.53 mph, the fastest speed ever achieved in the world for a piston engine propeller driven airplane. Hinton's official record falls within the sub-class for internal combusion engine planes with a weight of between 3,000 to 6,000 kg and eclipsed Will Whiteside Jr's previous mark of 318.01 m.p.h. achieved in 2017.
Since his early days studying aeronautical engineering, Dr. Iscold was mentored by Prof. Claudio Barros – a notorious airplane design professor in Brazil – and Mr. Joseph Kovacs – the designer of the renown EMBRAER Tucano, among others airplanes. For his undergraduate capstone paper, under the supervision of Prof. Barros, Dr Iscold designed his first airplane: the CEA-308, which he built during his Master Program. This airplane made its debut flight in Dec. 2001. Read more about our speaker here.
Just a reminder for attendees: there will be a great assortment of raffle items available. Dinner is catered and open to the public ($25/person), reservations are required prior to 6 p.m., Monday prior to dinner, either On-line HERE or call 805 296-1935.

Volunteers Needed!
Warbirds Wings & Wheels & Swap Meey is one of the largest, if not the largest fundraiser done every year for Estrella Warbirds Museum, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Warbirds Wings & Wheels on May 7th, 2022 makes it now in our 13th year, and it has happened every year due to a terrific group of volunteers who come out, show up and help do everything from parking, selling tickets, vehicle registration, judging cars, pouring beer & wine, helping out in the gift shop, cleanup, set up and a host of other available positions. We would love for you to come out and join us for the day. We even provide free lunch and dinner, complete with drinks and a fun atmosphere. If you can spare a day or even just 4 hours, we'd love to have you join us. A partial list of positions here and it includes a link in how to contact us or call Ken Neuman 805 238-9317. During the show, volunteers receive free WWW T-shirt, lunch and dinner (plus drinks - age appropriate). It's always a fun day!

We Found It!!! A - P-38 Tor The Museum
|
Joel Chesler, EWM member and Local Merchant Liaison (you can thank him for the raffle prizes at the dinners), has been on a mission to find the museum a P-38 Lightning. After all, our museum is named after the former Estrella Army Air Forces field here in Paso Robles, where pilots were trained for night flying and the most commonly used aircraft at the time was the Lockheed P-38 Lightning.
There are very few flying P-38's left in the world and the last one sold for over $6 million dollars! However, during this past year of searching, he found the next best thing, a full size heavy duty fiberglass replica P-38 Lightning which is up for sale in Miami where it was the main attraction of an aviation themed restaurant. After seeing a video of the aircraft, the condition appears exceptional and we know you would agree that this would make a terrific cornerstone display at Estrella Warbirds Museum.
|
Take a look at the walk around video of this P-38 and help us raise the funds to acquire, dismantle, and transport this exceptional replica across country. We are negotiating sales price and costs for retrieval. Total costs is unknown at this time.

All three historic planes shown on the right were to over the San Luis Film Festival showing of Into Flight Once More and were also guests at the Estrella Warbirds Museum 4/27/20. Betsy had a last minute hiccup and couldn't make the flyover. The film follows the C-47's and DC-3's (including Betsy's Biscuit Bomber and crew) that flew to Normandy in 2019 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of D-Day landing during WWII. The DVD of the movie has not been released yet, but you can sign up to buy one at the video link above.

News From The Woodland Auto Display
|
|
Woodland Auto Display was guest host this past month to many of the great Legends of Kearney Bowl (LOKB) Speedway who came to view the special Kearney Bowl Speedway displays. A very special "Thank You" goes out to Jim Perry and Ed Barios for loaning us the two historic Pombo - Sargent cars currently on display. An extra big shout-out to the man behind the original LOKB group and long time Woodland Auto DIsplay supporter, Jim Perry. He has not only loaned us his historical race cars but numerous rare display items, trophies, etc.. Most recently, he was the key to making the Pombo - Sargent display become a reality. LOKB member, Phil Moradian presented Dick Woodland with a great tribute drawing of everybody's favorite, Hall of Fame member Kenny Takeuchi. (Thank you to Judie Moradian who, unfortunately, was unable to make the trip.).
