Annual Christmas Store
With the lingering negative impact of the pandemic and economy on our immediate neighbors, St. Philip’s Annual Community Christmas Store was needed more than ever. Last December, we served 500 families (twice as many from prior years) through this dignified Christmas “shopping” program. We are so blessed to be able to depend on many faithful friends and supporters to ensure our responsiveness to our struggling neighbors.

St. Philip’s is a recipient of the WFAA Channel 8 Santa’s Helpers program, receiving large amounts of toys, in addition to toys, clothing, and other items donated by volunteers, board members, partner organizations, and school families to help stock the store. We want to send a huge thank you to Saint Michael and All Angels Church for donating over 500 new coats and Junior League of Dallas for their engagement, as the Christmas Store has been a Provisional Project for their organization for the past 10 years. Though times may be tough for many in our community, we are fortunate to be change agents in South Dallas
COMMUNITY NEWS
Educating Our Community to Ignite Change
Last month we hosted a Lunch and Learn for community members to enjoy a prepared lunch and learn more about Tax Increment Financing Districts (TIF Districts) and their importance in our community. 23 community members attended the event, which focused on what TIF Districts are and what they are not. A TIF District is a tool to ensure the natural increase of property taxes stays within the community. It also funds needed infrastructure improvements such as wider sidewalks, buried utilities, landscaping, lighting, and more. After an insightful Lunch and Learn, a few of our community members returned for the City Council meeting on December 8th where the request to include our neighborhood in the Grand Park South TIF District was evaluated. The request for TIF expansion was approved—a huge win for our community!
WeCreation Center Served as “Home Base” for Supporting MLK Blvd Improvements
St. Phillips has been heavily involved in championing improvements for Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Last year, the City of Dallas was awarded funds from the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) to pay for engineering complete street improvements for Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. In anticipation of getting started on the engineering, and recognizing that Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. ranks among the top five streets in Dallas for the most traffic fatalities and severe injuries, the city of Dallas conducted a Road Safety Audit in August & December 2021 with the assistance of staff from NCTCOG and the Federal Highway Administration (FHA).

The WeCreation Center served as “home base” for the site visits they did as part of the Road Safety Audit. Some of the FHA recommendations to the city Dallas include:
  • Determine preferred bicycle accommodation for MLK
  • Dual ramp curb design, relocated push buttons, and dedicated consistent paths for walking
  • Refresh pavement markings
  • Enhance intersection lighting and upgrade lighting to be consistent color/temperature

To stay informed and updated on developments see the Dallas Department of Transportation public meetings page. Learn more about the WeCreation Center.
